Maori All Blacks coach Tamati Ellison has joined Jason Holland’s coaching group at the Blues for the 2027 season.

The pair famously worked together in Scott Robertson’s All Blacks staff during the 2024 and 2025 Test seasons, with Ellison initially joining as contact skills coach before taking on the defence portfolio when Leon MacDonald abruptly departed. Ellison was previously with Robertson at the Crusaders after leading the Wellington Lions.

The 43-year-old’s playing career includes four Tests with the All Blacks and a Commonwealth Games gold medal in Sevens.

It’s a resume that Blues GM Rugby Murray Williams was thrilled to bring into camp after departing head coach Vern Cotter recruited defence coach Craig McGrath to join him at the Queensland Reds.

“Tamati has a deep understanding of the game and team culture, strong leadership qualities and a proven ability to connect with players and help them grow,” Williams said.

“His coaching journey over recent years has been impressive, from the provincial game through to Super Rugby and the international arena. He brings valuable experience from some of the best environments in world rugby, and we’re excited about what he’ll add to our programme.”

Ellison, who made his Super Rugby debut for the Blues in 2005, his lone game for the club, said the opportunity to reconnect with Holland in Auckland was a great opportunity.

“The Blues are one of the great clubs in New Zealand rugby, with a proud history and a strong connection to their community,” Ellison said.

“When the opportunity came to work alongside Jason and be part of what the club is building for the future, it was one that really appealed to me. There is outstanding talent throughout the organisation and a real desire to keep pushing forward.

“I’m looking forward to getting to Auckland, connecting with the players and staff, and helping create an environment where people can perform at their best.”

Ellison will continue in his role as Maori All Blacks head coach.
