World Rugby Nations Cup Format

The 2026 World Rugby Nations Cup is the inaugural edition of the World Rugby Nations Cup. It’s a second-tier competition, immediately below the Nations Championship. In the future, promotion and relegation will exist between the two competitions (although both promotion and relegation will not take place in the 2026 edition).

The competition features 12 international sides that have been split into two pools of six. Each team will play all of the teams once in the opposite pool across the summer and autumn international windows. For the first two editions in 2026 and 2028, there will not be a finals day to crown an overall champion, and two champions will be crowned, one in each pool.

Pool A is the Americas-Pacific Pool, which contains Canada, Chile, Samoa, Tonga, USA and Uruguay. Meanwhile, Pool B is the European-African-Asian Pool, which includes Georgia, Hong Kong China, Portugal, Romania, Spain and Zimbabwe

The tournament is also split into two series. In July, the Americas-Pacific Series takes place. This is followed by the European-African-Asian Series in November.

In the Americas-Pacific Series, three rounds of action will take place. All matches will be held in the Americas region. To facilitate this, Samoa will play their matches in South America, while Tonga will play their matches in North America. To reduce travel, each of the visiting teams from Europe will play all of their matches in either North America or South America.

Following this, in the European-African-Asian Series, the European sides will host matches at their home stadiums. Meanwhile, Zimbabwe will host their matches in England, while Hong Kong China will play their first two matches in Europe before playing their third fixture at home.
