England U20 players handed warning as they face JWC's most dangerous attack
England U20 attack coach Will Parkin has warned his young charges that they cannot switch off in their winner-takes-all World Rugby Junior World Championship Pool C clash with Argentina at the Avchala Stadium tomorrow lunchtime.
Both teams have taken 10 points from their two games, and only the pool winners progress to the semi-final stages. Only Australia, with 143 points, have scored more than Argentina (140) in the tournament.
England won their last meeting 41-20 two years ago, but so far Argentina have shown why they are among the favourites to win this tournament, and Parkin knows the threat that they pose.
“Obviously, as an attack coach, they are a joy and an inspiration to watch. They are certainly playing the brand of rugby that I love. They are exciting, but it’s also a case of us having to be aware of what threats they possess.
“They’re very consistent in their team selection, and obviously they’ve come off the back of The Rugby Championship. A few weeks off that, they’re then straight into the World Cup, which is obviously slightly different to our lads.
“We have a large gap between Six Nations and coming out here to the World Cup. 17 of the 20 tries that they have scored in the first two games have come within one phase, which obviously is something that we have to be aware of.
“It definitely is something we’ve focused on this week. A big factor for us going into tomorrow is just making sure we stay switched on and follow positive moments up with other positive moments.
“It’s a big focus for us in terms of just staying switched on. If you’d said we’d have been 10 points from 10 with no players injured or banned, and been able to rest some of our key players going into the knockout stages, we’d have taken it at the start of the tournament.
“Certainly areas that we wanted to fix up from the Six Nations have progressed nicely, like our attacking play. There are certainly bits we can keep going after. I think we are fourth across the competition for points scored. So again, there are certain areas we can get better in,” he said.
