Andy Farrell will remain Ireland head coach through to the end of the 2031 Rugby World Cup after signing a long-term extension with the Irish Rugby Football Union.

The deal commits Farrell to a further two World Cup cycles and removes any immediate uncertainty over the leadership of the men’s national side, with the IRFU insisting continuity and long-term planning as central to the decision.

Should the 51-year-old complete the term he will have been in charge for 12 years.

Farrell’s future had been the subject of some speculation, including links to a possible return to his old club Saracens. Those reports were quickly played down by the Gallagher PREM club and today’s deal puts pay to them.

Farrell took charge in 2019 and has led Ireland through a period of consistent success, including sustained top-tier results.

IRFU chief executive Kevin Potts said securing Farrell’s services was a significant move for the union.

“We are delighted to secure Andy through to 2031. He is a world-class coach and an exceptional leader who has helped shape Ireland as one of the most exciting and consistent teams in the world,” Potts said.

“His impact reaches far beyond the pitch. He has instilled pride, connection and belief across Irish rugby, creating a culture that unites players and supporters.

“Ensuring Andy’s long-term future is a positive step as we continue to grow the game and strive for sustained success on the international stage.”

Performance director David Humphreys said: “Andy’s contract extension is a key investment in the long-term success of the Ireland team through to the 2031 Rugby World Cup,” he said.

“His leadership has established a clear performance vision, with consistently high standards and an environment where players and staff can thrive.

“This gives us confidence as we continue developing our playing group and strengthening our high-performance systems, with alignment from pathway level through to the senior team.”

On the pitch, the extension removes a potential distraction as Ireland build towards the next World Cup cycle, though it also increases scrutiny on Farrell’s ability to convert consistent form into knockout-stage success at global tournaments.

Farrell himself said the decision was rooted in belief in the system and the next generation of players.

“I am proud to continue this journey with Irish rugby,” he said. “It is a privilege to work with such a talented group and to represent the supporters whose passion inspires us every time we take the field.

“What excites me most is the strength of the pathways and the quality of talent coming through. There is real confidence in the system across the provinces and age-grade programmes, and I believe the best is yet to come.”

Absolutely no brainer. I hope he got the best deal he ever got. Because people want him working for them. I hope he does another Lions Tour. I wish him the best. EXCEPT when Ireland play ENGLAND. This is good business.
