Scott Robertson releases statement on All Blacks departure

Scott Robertson says he is “gutted” to leave the All Blacks, but is proud to have contributed to the team over the past two seasons.

The 51-year-old shared the sentiment in a statement released shortly after New Zealand Rugby confirmed his exit on Thursday afternoon.

Robertson spoke about the emergence and development of young players, his disappointment at leaving, and his care for the team, adding that he would make no further comment on the situation.

“Coaching the All Blacks has been the honour of my life,” he reflected. “I am incredibly proud of what this team has achieved and of the progress we have made. We have brought through a talented group of young players, strengthened the depth across the squad, and set solid foundations for the years ahead.

“Following the end-of-year review, I have taken time to reflect on some of the feedback. My priority has always been the success of the All Blacks and, after discussions with New Zealand Rugby, I believe it is in the best interests of the team for me to step aside.

“I have therefore reached an agreement with New Zealand Rugby to end my contract early so a new coaching group has the time it needs to prepare and take the team into the next World Cup.

“As you can imagine, I am gutted by this outcome. I care deeply about this team.

“Given the sensitivity of this situation, I will not be making any further comment.”

Robertson leaves with a 74 per cent win rate and an All Blacks trophy cabinet a touch more bare than when he arrived in 2024.

New Zealand Rugby says the appointment process to find Robertson’s replacement has begun immediately, as the union recognises the seismic Test calendar that begins on July 4.

Robertson’s legacy in Super Rugby Pacific remains one of absolute dominance, feeding expectations of an All Blacks promotion that has ultimately fallen short of the mark.

Confirmation on various pieces of speculation will be sought when New Zealand Rugby chair David Kirk addresses the media at 4 pm in Auckland, with questions over star flanker Ardie Savea’s future in New Zealand and the 2025 season review sure to be asked.

Not everyone's cup of tea, but classy statement.....history will judge (or not) but for me there will always be a sense of unfinished business for him. His Crusaders were a joy to watch and the gold standard for me…..was he given enough time. You cannot re-invent/re-configure a high grade brand like ABs without some level of discord and attrition on the journey.

I feel Razor had a plan to build squad dept and a strong team for 2027.That clearly entailed getting some promising youngsters through and ensuring All black rugby will be competitive beyond world cup. That being said I feel he had to also restore dominance in an evolving world game where are teams are closer to each other than ever before.Yes at time it looked like the team were hapless but vision was always clear.Definately not the most rational decision and a big gamble two years out.

Razor would be a great fit at Harlequins

Here we go again, the NZRU stuff up again. I wish Razor all the best. Please Razor don't go beating us with another team.

His unhealthy obsession caused his downfall. Mounga has a 72% win rate as a starter. Not the superstar Razor thought he was.

Robertson spoke about the emergence and development of young players

Is he finally acknowledging he didn’t do enough in this area? Lol

Holland. Sititi, Tosi, Aumua, Roigard, Preston, Proctor, yeah right no player development.

On a professional level, I do not feel sorry for this man. Particularly in the way he chased the job while Foster was in charge.

On a personal level, I hope he has good support around him and recovers from this.

Would be good to see him get back into coaching. Perhaps a move to Northern Hemisphere would be good for him to develop as a coach.

On a professional level, his coaching team lacked experience from the start and this is ultimately what cost him - playing tactics, confusing selection, bench strategy and an impotent attack cost him, which are all down to coaching at this level.

It’s not personal but this current vintage of 2025/6 Razor AB’s are nowhere near the RWC team of 2023 . . . . And there lies the issue.

You have to remember there is a person at the heart of this who will feel crushed & devastated.

That will take time to get over and rebuild his energy, so hopefully he has some time off and then you will see what he does next.

Yeah he definitely milked the saviour label more than he should've given the lack of international experience. I'm no fan of Foster as coach but it's not a good look to smarmily punch a man while he's down

He should have done an international stint before the ABs, agreed. Where does he go now?
