Scott Robertson releases statement on All Blacks departure

Scott Robertson says he is “gutted” to leave the All Blacks, but is proud to have contributed to the team over the past two seasons.

The 51-year-old shared the sentiment in a statement released shortly after New Zealand Rugby confirmed his exit on Thursday afternoon.

Robertson spoke about the emergence and development of young players, his disappointment at leaving, and his care for the team, adding that he would make no further comment on the situation.

“Coaching the All Blacks has been the honour of my life,” he reflected. “I am incredibly proud of what this team has achieved and of the progress we have made. We have brought through a talented group of young players, strengthened the depth across the squad, and set solid foundations for the years ahead.

“Following the end-of-year review, I have taken time to reflect on some of the feedback. My priority has always been the success of the All Blacks and, after discussions with New Zealand Rugby, I believe it is in the best interests of the team for me to step aside.

“I have therefore reached an agreement with New Zealand Rugby to end my contract early so a new coaching group has the time it needs to prepare and take the team into the next World Cup.

“As you can imagine, I am gutted by this outcome. I care deeply about this team.

“Given the sensitivity of this situation, I will not be making any further comment.”

Robertson leaves with a 74 per cent win rate and an All Blacks trophy cabinet a touch more bare than when he arrived in 2024.

New Zealand Rugby says the appointment process to find Robertson’s replacement has begun immediately, as the union recognises the seismic Test calendar that begins on July 4.

Robertson’s legacy in Super Rugby Pacific remains one of absolute dominance, feeding expectations of an All Blacks promotion that has ultimately fallen short of the mark.

Confirmation on various pieces of speculation will be sought when New Zealand Rugby chair David Kirk addresses the media at 4 pm in Auckland, with questions over star flanker Ardie Savea’s future in New Zealand and the 2025 season review sure to be asked.

On a professional level, I do not feel sorry for this man. Particularly in the way he chased the job while Foster was in charge.

On a personal level, I hope he has good support around him and recovers from this.

Would be good to see him get back into coaching. Perhaps a move to Northern Hemisphere would be good for him to develop as a coach.

He should have done an international stint before the ABs, agreed. Where does he go now?
