LEINSTER WIN AT BAYONNE IN CHAMPIONS CUP

Leinster battled to a 22-13 win at Bayonne which secured home advantage in the last 16 of the Investec Champions Cup.

Bayonne – who had lost their opening three games, including to both Leicester and Harlequins – took an early lead at Stade Jean Dauger through a breakaway try from Sireli Maqala in the 14th minute before Harry Byrne’s penalty got Leinster, already qualified from Pool 3, on the board.

After Joshua Kenny just failed to take the ball and go over in the corner, a long-range penalty from Joris Segonds put the French side further ahead. Thomas Clarkson then saw his 33rd-minute try disallowed for a double movement as Bayonne went into half-time 10-3 in front.

Bayonne’s Herschel Jantjies was shown a yellow card in the 49th minute for a deliberate knock on. Leinster made the most of their advantage when Dan Sheehan slid over in the 56th minute and Byrne nailed the conversion to bring the visitors level at 10-10.

Segonds kicked another penalty on the hour to swiftly restore Bayonne’s lead, which looked to have been wiped out when Jimmy O’Brien charged onto a kick from Sam Prendergast and went down in the corner – only for his try to be ruled out by the TMO for failing to ground the ball as he was tackled over the line.

Leinster produced a strong finish as Prendergast latched onto Byrne’s chipped pass under the posts and then Max Deegan crossed in the corner to make sure of another hard-earned win to maintain their 100 per cent record at the top of the group.

LEICESTER’S LAST-16 HOPES IN TATTERS AFTER DEFEAT BY STORMERS

Leicester’s last-16 hopes were left in tatters after a 39-26 defeat by Stormers in Cape Town.

Early tries from Evan Roos and Andre-Hugo Venter put the hosts in control before George Pearson pulled one back.

Some Will Wand magic hauled the Tigers back into the match at half-time and they led by six when Jamie Blamire went over early in the second half.

However, tries from Leolin Zas and JD Schickerling edged the Stormers back in front before Tom Manz scored for Leicester.

But Imad Khan denied the Tigers a losing bonus point when his late try sent Stormers through.

Instead, a losing bonus point against Harlequins on Sunday will be enough for La Rochelle to qualify and knock out Leicester.

Today was the day that a realistic chance of Leinster winning this competition receded.

Unless they get lucky they won’t get a top 2 seeding. They are not good enough to win a semi final away to a top 4 side.

Thew coaches seem to be stuck in a bygone era. Phase play that brought Leinster and Ireland some success is gone as the primary attacking strategy. This match was a classic example. Bayonne knew that Leinster would try to advance with phase play and knew the ball was wet. Solution~? Contest every scrum, slow Leinster down if not turnover. Turn the game into a kicking contest knowing their great kicker Segonds was in their camp. Leinster did make incursions into the 22 but under pressure (that should have come as no suprize) they fluffed their lines. The one off pushes for the line was like something from the 90s. Easily repelled and turned over by Bayonne. In backline play they had no idea how to linebreak. Clunky off loads when not on. It was dire.

It turned to plan Z which was to wear Bayonne down and hope for the best. The finally took the lead after 75 mins. Bayonne were exhausted and shipped another try but too late for the bonus Leinster needed.

We heard “When Leinster play well they will be serious..”. But its nonsense. This is 10 matches in to the season. A team with the quality they have can’t make a line break. They have Rieko Ioane as a battering Ram in midfield. Looks like they missed the top 2 today and will be gone as soon as they meet a contender (Bordeaux, Toulouse, Northampton, Bath, Glasgow). Thats it.

What Robertson exit tells us about where NZ rugby is at - Andy Goode

When will the NZRFU realize there decades long money grabing arrogance and outright disrespect for its own countrymen is there true failing, its association with Sky sport has taken the game away from the very people they need now, the children who often don’t come from privileged homes, the children who can’t go to pubs etc,the children who unlike previous generations no longer get to sit up at 4 in the morning with there family’s,fathers grandfather's, uncles, family friends, mothers and sisters etc Those days are gone. You may also blame the NZ Government for allowing a government funded sporting body for taking our national sport from US,and monyterising what was originally meant for promoting the health and fitness of our children. Well along with many of our other sports now ransomed by Sky Sport I fear it’s to late to fix and our future all blacks will be playing video games instead. To blame a single coach for a decades long destruction of our potential player pool is ludicrous, if you give a farmer 200 acres of concrete and blame him for losing his live stock you would probably be the NZRFU you are 20 mins from full time and 15 points down NZ rugby it’s time to dig in, time to change your game plan and get the game back out to the All Black’s that count there only 5yos but they will watch and want to play if you let them see our magnificent game. I’m 65 years old, I remember listening to games on the radio watching them in black and white then colour I remember the family unity a test match bought to our homes I remember aching for Saturdays with my mates dreaming of being a star but most of all I remember being match fit, I've seen it all and I know as a certainty that big business is a plague to sport …change the board not coaches.
