Eight men’s and women’s teams will take to the field at the Sevens Stadium with the hope of advancing all the way to the HSBC SVNS World Championship Series later this year.

Women’s teams from Argentina, Colombia, Czechia, Mexico, Poland, Samoa, South Africa and Thailand, and men’s teams from Belgium, Canada, Colombia, Hong Kong China, Italy, Madagascar, Samoa and Tonga, will all be competing for a top two finish in the tournament and advancement to HSBC SVNS 2.

HSBC SVNS 2 will take place across three events hosted in Nairobi, Montevideo and São Paulo between February and March. Established sevens nations, including Kenya, Uruguay and the USA are among the 12 teams to have already qualified.

The 12 men’s and women’s teams will vie for a finish in the top four and a place in the HSBC SVNS World Championship Series. The winner-takes-all championship will feature 24 teams across stops in Hong Kong, Valladolid and Bordeaux.

“The team has high expectations,” Paula Pedrozo, Argentina captain’s said. “We have been working hard to refine details and continue improving our defensive and attacking systems, analysing our opponents and, of course, analysing our strengths and weaknesses.

“The main objective is to qualify for SVNS 2. Winning the championship would be a nice bonus.”

Spain’s men’s team are seen as the archetypal model of success. After a tenth-place finish in 2023/24 and surviving the play-offs, the side retained their place for the 2024/25 season and went on to reach the final of the HSBC SVNS World Championship in Los Angeles.
