New Zealand Rugby (NZR) has confirmed that Tony Brown will leave his role with South Africa to join the All Blacks coaching setup from 2028 on a two-year deal.

Brown is currently part of the Springboks staff and is contracted through to the end of the Men’s Rugby World Cup in 2027.

Brown’s move formalises a return to NZ following his on-going stint on Rassie Erasmus’ coaching ticket. The former All Blacks fly-half is expected to slot into the national setup more or less immediately after the 2027 Rugby World Cup in Australia next year.

NZR CEO Steve Lancaster said: “Tony is a world-class coach who is highly regarded and consistently sought after by head coaches and teams around the world.

“We know Tony is available after the 2027 Rugby World Cup and he’s made it clear he would love to be part of the All Blacks. This decision is simple, it’s about ensuring the best coaches return to New Zealand.

“It’s for the All Blacks Head Coach to shape the structure and portfolios of their coaching team and we have every confidence that Tony is a high-quality addition when he joins in 2028.”

The appointment was led by incoming NZR High Performance Director Don Tricker, who will begin his own role full-time as of November 2026.

All Blacks head coach Dave Rennie was involved throughout the process and is understood to be supportive of the decision.

Lancaster added: “One of Don’s roles is to lead the appointments of our national team coaches. As part of that we have agreed with Dave we will discuss the process for the All Blacks Head Coach role no later than the conclusion of the 2027 Rugby Championship.

“For now, Dave and his coaching team are absolutely focused on what’s in front of them and we look forward to challenging ourselves against Tony and the Springboks in the coming months.”

Does that mean Dave Rennie will by then be sacked for Jamie Joseph ?

A great coach, hardly news.

RP is one of the worst sites I know for clickbait headlines. It’s not happening for 2 years, but the headline makes it appear like it will happen tomorrow.

Another very solid appointment by the AB’s and what a transformation since Kirk took the Chair role.

They are making the appointments the fans wanted to see and if Dave Rennie and the coaches can life the playing style and performance levels, they will be in a very good place for the future.

It’s hard not to be impressed by the direction of travel, there’s some really good decision making taking place within that structure at the moment.

As a Book fan I was happier with the 2019-2025 AB trend. Seeing all the pieces come together is a little scary

Yes but equally, it would have been crazy not to secure TB and leave him in SA for another WRC cycle. I know some of our SA posters (Hammer et al) were saying he and his family were settling in!

Well, that’s excellent news. NZR is already securing a very important piece of the next cycle.

Imagine the All Blacks becoming world champions with Rennie and Blair as their attack coach… It would be interesting to see how all of that unfolds.

We’re not there yet, though. For now, Blair and Brown are on opposite sides.

Party at Tony Browns house!

Wow didn’t see this coming after the coaching group had been landed.

A little disrespectful to Mike Blair perhaps? Hiring his successor before he’s even started? But I understand they wanted to lock in Tony, interesting move

Tony Brown could take over from Neil Barnes, with Blair remaining in place. Rennie has given the green light for Brown to join. I think he has a plan in mind.

We’re not at that stage yet… Let’s first see how the coaching staff assembled for the 2026/2027 season performs.
