Wales international Nel Metcalfe has re-signed for Premiership Women’s Rugby champions Gloucester Hartpury ahead of the new season.

The 21-year-old full-back, who attended Hartpury College and Hartpury University, first joined the club in 2024 having impressed for Gwalia Lightning in the Celtic Challenge.

During her time in the West Country, Metcalfe has helped the Circus lift two PWR titles. The back three player has missed this Guinness Women’s Six Nations with a knee injury.

Dan Murphy, Gloucester Hartpury head of rugby, said: “Nel’s understanding of the game and ability to break teams down has really grown since joining us, and she’s shown she has a genuine try-scoring threat from anywhere across the back three.

“She’s becoming an increasingly dangerous player at this level, and what’s most exciting is that there’s still plenty of growth ahead of her.

“Even while she’s currently working through injury rehab, we’re really pleased with the direction she’s heading and are looking forward to seeing her back on the pitch doing what she does best.”

Metcalfe made her Wales debut in 2023 as an 18-year-old against the USA Women’s Eagles and played at that year’s WXV 1 competition in New Zealand.

At Women’s Rugby World Cup 2025, the 21-year-old was one of the few bright sparks for Wales as they exited the tournament after three matches.

Metcalfe said: “I’ve really enjoyed my time here so far and feel like I’m growing a lot as a player in this environment. Right now, I’m focusing fully on my rehab and doing everything I can to get back to full fitness.

“I’m looking forward to being back out there once I’ve completed that process and feeling ready to contribute again. The standards here are really high and that’s exactly what I need at this stage of my career. I’m excited to keep building on that and see where it takes me.”
