Springboks fans are saying the same thing after Scott Robertson exit

New Zealand Rugby’s decision to part ways with All Blacks coach Scott Robertson has sent shockwaves across the rugby world.

Be it ramifications for the World Cup next year, clubs now linked with the coach or coaches now in contention to lead the All Blacks, there are few competitions in the world that aren’t in some way impacted by this news.

One team that could be affected are South Africa, with Springboks attack coach Tony Brown being widely discussed as a candidate to join a new-look All Blacks coaching team, particularly if Jamie Joseph should take the head coach role, who worked with Brown at the Highlanders and with Japan.

Robertson’s departure has certainly left Springbok fans nervous on social media, with many expecting New Zealand Rugby to attempt to lure the 18-cap All Black out of his contract and away from Rassie Erasmus’ coaching team.

While many Bok fans are expecting the All Blacks to make a move for Brown, there is a divide online in how they expect him to respond.

There is a contingent of fans that are confident Brown will stay in his role, having revolutionised the Springbok attack since arriving after the 2023 World Cup triumph. One fan wrote on X: “So you’re expecting Tony Brown to leave his current comfy and super successful role with the best coach in the world mid contract, to go be assistant AGAIN at the same employers who ignored him when he was there available?”

Another wrote: “It would be such a fall from grace for Tony Brown. The Springboks already have one hand on the 2027 World Cup. The All Blacks don’t even have a pinky on it, they just haven’t been good enough with the current guys they have. Not enough world class quality.”

Another wrote: “Those who are saying Tony Brown in for the All Blacks why would he leave the Springboks where he essentially has 2 teams of players good enough to challenge for WC. All blacks struggling at Lock & 10. No clear backup at 9 & no top option on other wing to Caleb Clarke.”

Though the bulk of Bok fans seem confident that Brown will see out his contract with South Africa until after the 2027 World Cup, there are also many that have adopted a more pragmatic and philosophical outlook, accepting that it will be his ultimate desire to coach the All Blacks.

One fan wrote: “Even if there is clause, SA Rugby would be foolish to enforce it if he wants to go, which would be completely understandable. If we force him to stay when he doesn’t want to, despondency & resentment will kick in, & that becomes toxic throughout. Rather be gracious & let him go!”

Another said: “I don’t want us to lose him, but if he gets or takes the job we have to respect it. He is a New Zealander and an AB after all. Home is where the heart is.”

Whether they expect him to go or stay, the majority of South Africa fans agree on one thing: the All Blacks will be eyeing Tony Brown.

I was part of a debate a month or so ago about TB returning to NZ. One compelling response seemed to be that he and most importantly his family was now settled in SA. That makes sense up to 2028. After that, surely multiple loyalties to NZ, including family, Otago, ABs and JJ will kick in.

NZRU also needs to focus on people who really want to coach here. TB looks great but he’s not the only coach that knows how to get the most out of good players. So if he is not jumping at the chance then move on and quickly.

South Africa can win the world cup with or without Tony Brown. They have won 2 without him. New Zealand don't have the same player pool and have struggled at U20 level too.

TB said working with the wealth of talent in South Africa has been a dream.

It would be quite amusing if the replacement had similar results

Haha I love the South Africans and their funny quirks, how can a nation all think the same thing! This is just Gold.

Brown will end up as head coach of the ABs in due course. Patience..

TB has already tested the waters of trying to be a HC and he said it wasn’t his thing.

NZR have imposed a year long non-compete on Robertson covering all Tier 1 nations, even though they were the ones who kicked him out and he has no payout.

Now, if Brown refuses to honour his contract with SA, what are the odds that SA will impose a two year non-compete?

Or, if confronted with such a threat, he sucks up the consequences of his own spectacular misjudgement in repeatedly refusing an AB's assistant role and sticks with the clear favourite to win RWC 2027?

My pick is that this is the first of many disappointments coming the way of NZR, the AB fans, and the players. Maybe then they will begin to recognise just where NZ actually is in the order of things.

SA and TB would already have agreed circumstances, in contract form before now. The two don’t separate otherwise, NZR wouldn’t even be trying if this wasn’t planned.

MM 46 days ago

He has always had an “out” clause if the rumour is to be believed so the Boks wouldn’t be able to ban him from coaching the ABs.

J
Jmann 46 days ago

It would need to be in his contract already; which it probably is. He’ll be back where he belongs in NZ before to long either way… with all that information ;)

Ok so Tony keeps on refusing working with the ABs? News to me. Just stop being so bitter because NZR are run by non professionals. The way you select coaches are so outdated

All of this just confirms what a great job Tony. And he’s not done yet. He won’t leave halfway. Even if Jamie is appointed to the ABs. I doubt Jamie would even expect it of him.

HH i don’t think either way it really matters for SA. The players now understand how to run and pass and play amazing running rugby and also the dna of old where they suffocate teams with territory and do both well on request and its needed. Tony or no tony SA have this sorted now i believe. yes he helped that transition but i doubt there would be any backward steps if tony moved. However its all speculation and he may stay, either way. Bok rugby is safe - this is ab supporter saying that.

I don’t reckon he’s going to bail on Rassie now, as much as we want him to.

M
MM 46 days ago

Don’t believe it Hammer. Tony will be out of SA 5 minutes after he gets the call from Jamie Joseph!!

S

When opportunity knocks and you don’t open the door, that opportunity rarely comes knocking again.

If Jamie Joseph becomes the new head coach and offers Tony Brown the attack job and Brown turns it down, there may not be a second opportunity. Joseph will have to hire someone else to be attack coach and will be loyal to him.

There will definitely be another chance for him. If they try and sell him that rubbish they are no better than the players stabbing coaches in the back. There is a very good chance he will be in a much better position post world cup. Everybody will only be getting 18 month contracts no matter who they are!

I’m a kiwi, I think it would be surprising for Tony to step away from the boks now that his hard work is paying off. They have a winning recipe and as much as he is a kiwi and former AB, being in an environment where your hard work is paying dividends is also very rewarding.

The thing that might do it is family or safety reasons. NZR should hire some tsotsis to rob his house in SA

Ugh

J
JW 46 days ago

Yep, or hire a South African or whoever Rassie would like to take over from TB, so that JJ has a bargaining chip to swap for him!

G
GRB13 46 days ago

It is highly likely to work out better for him to stay with the Springboks. Everyone thinks Jamie Joseph is a sure thing but they are not going to make the mistake again. It will be a wide selection process and only a 18 month contract no mater who it is. This means Tony Brown would be in a better position to coach the All Blacks post the world cup for a longer contract.

J
Jen 46 days ago

I don’t think TB will leave the Boks either. But maybe they’ll get someone in with JJ through to the world cup and TB will join later when his contract ends with the Boks. It’s going to be interesting to see how it all plays out anyway.

Wow

Icefarrow 46 days ago

Look, its possible, but I think it’d be in the best interest for both parties if Brown stayed. People are already assuming Joseph has the job, despite Kirk saying they only just started looking yesterday, and that he wants to cast as wide a net as possible for candidates.

J

That’s what they said in 2019 too.
