Henry Pollock will make his first start for England on Saturday against Ireland in round three of the Guinness Six Nations, with head coach Steve Borthwick making three changes to the starting XV that lost to Scotland 31-20 in the Calcutta Cup.

Having earned his first seven caps from the bench, the 21-year-old will start at No.8 at Twickenham’s Allianz Stadium in a revamped back-row, which will also see Tom Curry start at blindside flanker.

Curry and Pollock have been part of England’s ‘Pom Squad’ on the bench so far this season, but have swapped places with Guy Pepper and Sam Underhill following England’s disappointing display against Scotland in round two.

The only other change in the starting XV sees Ollie Lawrence make his first appearance of the Championship. He will start at outside centre, with Tommy Freeman moving onto the wing in place of Tom Roebuck, who has dropped out of the squad.

After being cleared to play following his two yellow cards at Murrayfield, Henry Arundell will start on the wing again.

Borthwick has kept the 6-2 split on the bench despite being scrutinised in the wake of the defeat, but has changed the two back options, with Jack van Poorvliet replacing scrum-half Ben Spencer and Marcus Smith replacing Fin Smith.

Despite only playing the final 25 minutes of the match, Pollock was one of England’s better performers against Scotland, though the bar was set low. Only two England players, Ben Earl and Freddie Steward, carried for more metres than the Northampton Saints star, who also registered a turnover metres from his own line.

Maro Itoje will lead the side in what will be his 100th England appearance.

“To reach 100 caps for England is a remarkable achievement and speaks volumes about Maro’s consistency and professionalism over many years,” said Borthwick.

“He leads through his actions every day, sets the standard for others and cares deeply about representing his country. We’re all incredibly proud of what he has achieved, and I know it will be a special day for him and his family.

“We’re expecting a huge contest at Allianz Stadium and we’re excited for it. We know the challenge Ireland will bring and we’ve selected a side that we believe has the right balance to meet it.”

It seems that Tom Roebuck has paid the price for a disappointing performance at Murrayfield .. whilst Freddie Stewart has dodged a bullet.

I’m not convinced that Dingwall is an international 12 .. unless he’s got F. Smith inside and Freeman outside.

Equally, I'm not surprised that Arundel has kept his place (4 tries in one and a half games is some strike rate!)

I like the look of the pack .. though I'd like to see either Chandler Cunningham-South or Ethan Roots on the bench (potentially instead of Coles).

Good luck England on Saturday!!

Well everyone is a expert and a top coach.

Everyone was shouting and screaming as England won 16 in row(won’t it) lost one game and reading this the squad should be sent home.

I thought in rugby union they win together and loss together no matter what.

Rrugby is a sport to watch but now a days everything is taken away with commitment made but people who should think about writing for the papers as full of ####.

The gentleman’s game HAS GONE

Well that wasn't what I was expecting at 11.

I thought Arundell was toast. The first yellow was borderline. But after sitting down for 10, the second was a very silly mistake.

Not surprised the pack is the shuffled rather than changed. Generally played well over the last year. 1 dodgy performance they should be allowed to respond.

Think Spencer was gone whatever the result against Scotland. And Fin for Marcus is the result of no outside cover at 13. But thought Ford might make way.

Spencer should never have been picked. He's not good enough. No idea why Arundel isn't toast. Seems like stubbornness. I don't know how Borthwick hasn't rolled the dice after the Scotland game. How does he look at that and think “this game plan is good we just need to execute better” which is what this selection says. I guess when you've won a bunch of games in a row it's hard not to cling onto that formula but the game plan was massively lacking.

Pollock looked to add some much needed width to the English attack judging from clips in a recent RP article, should be good to watch and hopefully Farrell is ready to fight fire with fire in that regard. Get his side back to what they had done well.

Agreed .

Either Blackett has been also overated, possible but unlikely, or he is keeping schtum and is boiling inside that his ideas are ignored.

Borthwick has a lot to answer for his total control of these conservative and boring tactics.

Will someone ask Borthwick to watch France .

As the parrot said.

“ that’s the way to do it”

Im sorry to commit heresy, but I really dont understand how itoji now commands a place in this team on his current form, let alone retains the captaincy.

And its very odd that despite the appointment of Lee Blackett as attack coach, the game plan is clearly going to be hoof & hope once again.

This team will muddle through the 6ns, against ( France apart) fairly mediocre opposition.

WC winners….get real

“the game plan is clearly going to be hoof & hope once again”

England kicked less and passed and carried more than Scotland on saturday.

I think it would have been better to put him back on the bench (at best) but he has clearly had other priorities and hasn’t been his normal self.

However, the decision I am struggling with is George Ford, Freddie Steward & Henry Arundell - did Steve not notice what 3 shockers they each had last week?

J

Have you agree with you on Itoje. As good a player as he has been, selection should be based on form and he has not shown anywhere near the level required for international rugby so far this season. I appreciate his off field issues and feel for the man, family bereavement is deeply personal, but at test level you need to be able to contain emotion.

Like you, I don't understand the faith the coaches set in the aerial bombardment tactic. With Lee Blackett, it seems to be a waste of a coach. Against Scotland the backs looked as though they'd never met each other before kickoff!

Coles should start along by Chessum, one of only three England players that performed on Saturday, Earl and Pollock being the other two.

If they fail against Ireland there needs to be a root and branch overhaul, coaches included. As for the non selection of overseas players………🤔

t
tf 45 days ago

Coles has looked good. Itoji was good in the Autumn. Fine against Wales. Being subbed off was probably a kick up the arse. Not an upward curve currently. The death of his Mother might be a cause here, but if so he and Borthwick should be honest with each other. Be interesting to see what happens Saturday

Fl.

You are noticeable by your silence after fords rubbish display and the world and their wife calling for him to be dropped.

World class game management and control of the game eh???

Oh where did it all go wrong????

His time is surely up or there will be protests at HQ .

Do you still think he will be there come the world cup ???

Go on .

You can tell me you were wrong.

AA, I’m not silent. If you click on my name and scroll down you’ll be able to read the several comments I have written about Ford since the game.

You also need to learn how to reply to comments - just typing someone’s initials and hoping they find your comment isn’t a good way to start a conversation.

“the world and their wife calling for him to be dropped.”

And a few weeks ago you were the only person who wanted him gone. Fans are fickle, but Borthwick knows what he’s doing. You don’t drop one of your best players because of one bad performance.

“His time is surely up or there will be protests at HQ .”

Have you read the teamsheet? Clearly his time isn’t up.

“Do you still think he will be there come the world cup ???”

Yes, 100%. He will be in the squad if he is fit.

“You can tell me you were wrong.”

Its really weird to be gloating about Ford getting dropped when Ford hasn’t been dropped. I would like to remind you that a year ago you were all aboard the Marcus train, and I was hedging my bets between Ford and Fin. Since then its become pretty clear that Ford and Fin are the only two players Borthwick is considering as starting 10s.

Utterly predictable selection.

Apart from poor Spencer and F Smith .

Obviously they shoulder part of the blame despite coming on after england had made themselves look idiots again.

Ford escapes mainly due to saving his bacon after doing his world class arm waving again .

He thinks it makes him look like he knows what he is doing .

Fools Borthwick anyway .

Kickfest once again lads.

Andy Farrell must be rather pleased neither of the Smiths are starting .

f
fl 45 days ago

Against Scotland England kicked 26 times, and Scotland kicked 28 times. Ford kicked fewer times than Finn Russell and Ben White.

England passed 154 times; Scotland passed 131 times. England carried 113 times; Scotland carried 100 times.

I hope we see a kickfest from England on saturday, because kicking more is the way to win rugby matches.

I would of also of put Genge on the bench. He has really owned that position as it allows him to come on and make an impact. Baxter being out is a fairly sizeable issue we won’t address with the current looseheads.

Who is the better scrummager out of Rodd and Manny?

u
unknown 45 days ago

Agreed. Baxter has been a big miss. Likewise on tighthead side Davison doesn’t have the same impact as Stuart or Opoku-Fordjour.

Rodd and Iyogun probably on par at moment. Iyogun is the better ball carrier while Rodd better at the breakdown

bookmakers heavily favor England

https://www.oddschecker.com/rugby-union/six-nations/england-v-ireland/winner

I dont know about that, the Irish backs are far more talented and creative and their forwards arent too shabby either, not as “golgoth-esque” as England’s but…

R
RoyceCoolidge 45 days ago

Ireland has backs more talented than Mitchell, Freeman, Arundel, Lawrence? Where have they been hiding them? England have picked a tiny back row. No ‘Golgoths’ in there l.

u
unknown 45 days ago

They totally favoured England over Scotland and look how that turned out. Ignore the bookies and focus on the game ahead

E
Eric Elwood 45 days ago

I am glad Ford starts as Fin Smith would have got the players around him more involved. We know whats coming with Ford. From the @NB article Ireland know Ford won’t run with the ball so he can safely be left to the inside cover. Makes defence a lot easier. and England reaching the edge harder. If we win the kicking battle we are in a good place. Balacoune and Lowe did well in the air versus Italy.

Freeman versus Lowe on the wing should be interesting. Balacoune and Arundel also. Ireland had some lovely backline moves that didn’t come off against Italy. They will need a couple to click on Saturday.

England will be boiling after their loss but Ireland will not be having a replay of the Paris performance. Should be good. England should win but it is not certain.

Not dis-similar to Scotland match except tighter to start with. Then England getting it tactically right to squeeze the Irish scrum and leverage enough points for a two score win.

J
JW 45 days ago

Even Andrew Mehrtens could run through a whole if no one stayed on him!

u
unknown 45 days ago

Ireland will likely punish Borthwick’s faith in Ford. You need more variation from a 10 but Ford is limited to kick and pass as he rarely runs and is targeted by big ball carriers. F Smith will run, pass and kick and hold his own in defence. Could be another painful afternoon for England with Ford at the helm

R
RT 45 days ago

England need a reaction after Scotland game, my concerns are that this England team has no running threats at 10,12 & 15 which I can't understand.

u
unknown 45 days ago

Would love to see Atkinson or Ojomoh at 12 as they can break the line and have good hands with both offering more than Dingwall. F Smith should be 10 as has the best all round game and gets the best out the backline. M Smith or Furbank offer a quicker and more dynamic threat at 15

u
unknown 45 days ago

Changes don’t go far enough. Ford should be replaced by F Smith. Atkinson or Ojomoh should come in for Dingwall. Also would have Fisilau or Cunningham-South instead of Underhill so there is more variation in bench options. Arundell also very lucky to be retained over Roebuck. Can only assume Furbank isn’t fully fit as he would be better than Steward

New report details source of Ardie Savea's All Blacks frustrations

Yeah it’s hard to be critical of Razor but of choices in his first year of the loosies he constantly played Ardie at 8. It would seem that was always the plan and that Hoskins was surplas to requirements (7, with Dalton then Cane, as was fairly happy with but understand the calls to drop Cane for his last test, along with TJ, and 6 was shared around nicely I thought) and he didn’t have the alround game of Ardie to simply overtake him at 8 (and use Ardie elsewhere). Of course he did that exact thing next year, too late for HS. Then last year 7 was fine if though the same problem was brought about by using Ardie (always leaves a component of a back three missing) there so often stopping Dalton from getting opportunities. At 6 Parker just had one or two too many games for me but 8 was shuffled around nicely, even if I don’t know why Lakai was thought to be the key there.

Of course a lot of rotation was brought about by, you guesed it, injury, still. Now to be fair to Razor, in reality we have no idea if he had to manage Ardie this way, based on NZRs desires with his contract (we have seen them move heaven and earth to retain him), and if he benched him often whether that would have caused him to leave or not. Or even that Hoskins would have accepted a jersey unless it was with a single digit on it, and a regular pick, as he had had to work his way back to the team without a big bump in his contract (of loosing AB selection early on) of other people his standing, so he also might have still put his family and therefor more over the jersey.
