Ex-All Black captain Read says Argentina gave the 'blueprint' for Boks

Ex-All Black captain Kieran Read believes that Argentina provided the blueprint for beating the Springboks in Buenos Aires a fortnight ago.

Los Pumas hosted a strong South Africa side, although missing a host of topline stars, and were able to trouble them in their 17-10 loss, missing the chance to draw level with the final play of the game.

They led 10-3 for most of the first half and created a number of opportunities out wide through a varied attacking game that implemented chips and cross-field kicks.

“Even though they [South Africa] didn’t put anything on the table in Argentina, Argentina showed us exactly how we should try to beat the Springboks,” Read said on The Good, The Bad & Rugby ANZ podcast.

“They found space on the edge. They defend between the 15s, the South Africans, and they’re not going to go away from that DNA.

“There is space there; you’ve got to be willing to trust the pass and trust your depth to be able to get the ball there and create opportunities off the back of that because they will scramble and you might only make a 10m break down that sideline, but if you can get quick ball off that, it creates opportunities elsewhere.

“So, I think that Argies showed us a great blueprint: you get a quick ruck ball in the middle of the ruck, they don’t have a sweeper, they don’t play a traditional nine – it’s on.”

Read’s assessment is backed by the statistics which show that Argentina created six line breaks to one in the opening 30 minutes in Buenos Aires with right wing Ignacio Mendy finishing with four for the game.

The home side was unable to capitalise on their breaks, turning over a number of scoring opportunities.

Ex-All Black halfback Justin Marshall believed that the altitude could favour New Zealand, with the visitors training at altitude for longer in this preparation with South Africa sending half of their squad to Argentina.

Marshall highlighted the 2022 match up where Ian Foster’s coaching staff got the game plan right for the venue.

“A few years ago [in 2022], we saw it. We lost the first Test in Nelspruit; we came down here as complete underdogs but moved the ball from all parts of the field, and Rassie had to replace his entire front row in about the 33rd minute – they were gassed, completely cooked,” Marshall said.

“That’s what you’ve got to do to this Springboks side because they’re a juggernaut. They’re so well-drilled, they’ve got such great method, they’ve got good DNA, good combinations, but everybody folds when you’re tired.

“Everybody concedes when you’ve got no air left in your chest. So, that’s what I’m hoping the All Blacks are going into this game with, particularly those guys with low minutes: make them get into the hurt locker early.”

WHO CARES?

Each game is different.

One aspect to Read’s theme that concerns me is the point that both sides defied convention in their attack. I am a little concerned that the ABs still look very stilted and conventional in their set piece simply because of that fact that they don’t trust themselves to get wide very quickly. In other words they haven’t found the answer to the rush defence.

Hey Ben Smith. Any pearls of wisdom before the big game on Saturday?

Ah yes. Let’s assume everyone but the South Africans watched the tapes after the Argentina game.

Also, that the Boks are actively stagnating.

Read’s a genius!

Good old Reado, the gift that keeps on giving, doesn’t even realise he’s describing the All Blacks approach who Los Pumas were probably following.

Ps I feel bad about taking the micky out of the fella but common man show a little pride in your jersey.

Argentina and Sctoland showed NZ exactly how to try to beat the Springboks because they did not beat the Springboks.

H
Hammer Head 45 days ago

Ah, yes. Argentina played well against the Boks. So NZ can definitely beat them.

H

Argentina can definitely beat NZ. They did it last year. Perhaps the Boks should copy Argentina?

Read’s armchair analysis - 1.

Springbok coaching team - 0.

Checkmate to the ABs.

Roll the credits.

More compelling was the Scotland first 40 against SA. Their 4-man attacking pod got past the gain line every time and created havoc for the sa defence. Pity that they couldn’t contain the SA power in the 2nd half. That shouldn’t be an issue for these ABs though. SA are not quite as far ahead of NZ as they like to think.

I agree with you in your final conclusion Jm but I think it would be folly to base a gameplan on what happened against Scotland and Argentina.

The AB’s were visible tired after 30 minutes at Loftus against the Bulls. At 31 minutes (first half) there was a passage of play in which the ball was carried three complete lengths of the field non stop and after that the AB forwards - especially Holland had their hands on their knees and someone went down for an injury break. They never looked anything like they did in the first 30 minutes after that. Be careful what you wish for. If you don’t believe me go and watch the game again.

Be great to see what we could do if did break that many tackles and we will be aiming to play a similar style to Scotland

B

They missed 47 tackles against Scotland 35 against Argentina, so they can be bent with the right tactics and execution…accuracy always the key of course

H
HS 45 days ago

With the right tactics, execution and accuracy these tackles may not be missed either.

Missed tackles is par for the course with an aggressive rush defence, although Scotland did glide through the midfield a bit too easily.

RWC23 Boks missed 169 tackles v AB’s 121 .. but they made 972 (99 dominant) tackles vs AB’s 864 (64 dominant).
