Rassie Erasmus names Bok team to face All Blacks with one surprise omission

South Africa head coach Rassie Erasmus has named his squad to face the All Blacks on Saturday at Ellis Park in the first match of their Greatest Rivalry series.

Pieter-Steph du Toit will captain what is a settled side in Siya Kolisi’s absence, with the XV largely being what everyone predicted.

One surprise decision comes at tighthead prop, where Wilco Louw has been selected to start, with Thomas du Toit missing out entirely. The six-cap Zachary Porthen will provide back-up on the bench.

There was plenty of debate leading into the match over who would form the half-back pairing, with Grant Williams and Sacha Feinberg-Mngomezulu ultimately getting the nod. They will operate inside Damian de Allende, who is set to win his 100th Test cap.

Feinberg-Mngomezulu and Eben Etzebeth are the only two players retained in the starting XV from the win over Argentina earlier this month. Both missed South Africa’s Nations Championship campaign last month and, along with Louw, are the three additions to the XV that beat England at Ellis Park at the beginning of July.

Erasmus has broken from tradition by naming his team after his opponents, albeit only hours after Dave Rennie announced his All Blacks squad.

“We are all very excited for Damian, and to achieve this milestone in this series makes it even more special,” said Erasmus.

“He’s a great team man, and servant to the game, so we hope we can make it a memorable day for him. That said, his focus all week has only been on this match, and he will certainly not let the occasion shadow what he has to do on the field.”

Looking at the Boks’ opponents, Erasmus said: “They are a quality team and they’re very well coached, so we are preparing for an 80-minute grind. They have a well-rounded squad with physical forwards and an exciting backline, so we have to be sharp and accurate in our execution from the outset.

“Many of the matches between the sides have come down to the wire, so it’s important that we use the chances we create and ensure that our discipline is on point. It’s going to be a big battle, but the entire squad is excited about the match and are looking forward to it.”

South Africa XV: 15 Damian Willemse (DHL Stormers); 14 Cheslin Kolbe (DHL Stormers), 13 Jesse Kriel (Canon Eagles), 12 Damian de Allende (Wild Knights), 11 Kurt-Lee Arendse (Mitsubishi Dynaboars); 10 Sacha Feinberg-Mngomezulu (DHL Stormers), 9 Grant Williams (Kobe Steelers); 1 Ox Nche (Hollywoodbets Sharks), 2 Malcolm Marx (Kubota Spears), 3 Wilco Louw (DHL Stormers), 4 Eben Etzebeth (Hollywoodbets Sharks), 5 Ruan Nortje (Kubota Spears), 6 Paul de Villiers (DHL Stormers), 7 Pieter-Steph du Toit (captain, Toyota Verblitz), 8 Jasper Wiese (Urayasu D-Rocks).
Replacements: 16 Jan-Hendrik Wessels (Vodacom Bulls), 17 Gerhard Steenekamp (Vodacom Bulls), 18 Zachary Porthen (DHL Stormers), 19 Cobus Wiese (Vodacom Bulls), 20 Andre Esterhuizen (Hollywoodbets Sharks), 21 Marco van Staden (Vodacom Bulls), 22 Cobus Reinach (DHL Stormers), 23 Manie Libbok (Kintetsu Liners).

excellent team my ABs will have their work cut out for them. Something special might be brewing though, we will see as this is a powerful team.

Awesome side !

Japser has just returned from Leicester, Reinach from Montpelier

It is a big game for SFM. Considering his outing at Los Pumas we definitely need him firing better than he did there. I reckon it is a game for him though, should bring out his best. Can’t wait!

He was clearly in need of a gallop in Argentina. He was pooped at the end - but he’s had two weeks to recover and he will be all the better for emptying his tank as he clearly did.

G
GrahamVF 45 days ago

Here’s a crazy prediction - if the AB’s are not at least ten points ahead at half time - they lose.

c
cnw 45 days ago

I was with you GVF before I saw the Bok team. They have favoured a mobile bench - and not clear how Esterheizen will be used - my initial reaction was that this is like the France Paris test where he plays where he needs to go - forwards or backs etc. But the more I think about it, the benches are more evenly matched than I had anticipated. If Esterheizen subs DDA then its a close contest mass wise in the forwards, while the ABs have gone for speed on the flanks. So, its going to be closer than I orginally thought.

N
Ninjin 45 days ago

At least 3 tries ahead maybe even four or no dice.

c
cnw 45 days ago

This is a very smart team - while not picked to respond to the ABs strengths it has done exactly that - 6-2 with lock and two flanking options, a super tough starting tight five, and a comparable impact tight five - especially with Cobus to add fire in the last 25. And I think that a big difference from the ABs impact bench - no additional mass / energy when needed most.

I wouldn’t call Andre forward. This is the typical 5/3 split just with hybrid players.

Were picking though if theres no backline injuries he’ll definitely been used in the last 15/20 to replace a loosie?

Obvs a niggle on the tank. But there’s nothing wrong having him in the later stages of the series. I worry about Eben and Ox - been going down with injuries a fair deal.

Feel a bit better that we have 3 prop options on the bench and 2 hooker options - in case we lose an Ox early again. I just hope he’s 100% fit. Trust in Doc Erasmus

I am worried HH - all the signs and most predictions point to a Bok win - but I feel the stars are aligning for a massive upset in true rugby tradition. I sincerely hope not.

Can’t wait for Saturday, would have liked to see BB on bench for AB’s, just for his composure and decision making, and Pollard on bench for Boks for his ability to close down a game and rack up points when teams are tired and the penalties start flowing. AB’s have looked awesome on attack, Boks less so last few games. Approaches to game so different for these two teams going to be very interesting. Boks to sneak back into game in second half and take the win coming from behind

M
MikeM 45 days ago

I am glad BB is not on the pine for the All Blacks, he is way past his best

G
Gameon 45 days ago

Excellent points, Mani Libbock is awesome but I hear you on Pollard

A
Ayre123 None 45 days ago

Not unexpected selection I guess, it based on the assumption that a ABs team where the kiwis are in minority isn’t strong enough to challenge the Boks at home?

L
Lou Cifer 45 days ago

Hope the Tank injury ain’t serious, as he still has an important part to play. Rassie chose the best scrummaging front-row from the get go to hopefully “set the tone” for the rest of the series. DeGroot/Taylor/Lomax are the ABs best scrummagers, so if we can hurt them there in test 1 already…..

Excited to see how it all pans out

G
GrahamVF 45 days ago

He’s not injured - it’s rotation Rassie knows the AB’s can’t field test standard props week after week - the series is not won in game one. He’s too canny to go for a whitewash - he’s happy with 3-1. And they have their best chance in. game 1.

No news that he is.

R
RugCs 45 days ago

Zac must have impressed to be picked ahead of Thomas the Tank. Fact is Rassie has 4 world class THP that can walk into any team in the world.

G
GrahamVF 45 days ago

He is not injured. Rassie has made a statement that he is on rotation as he is expecting to have to use at least none props during the series and props are going to get pretty exhausted playing four weeks in a row.

How do you know, did Rassie say something?

M
MrD89 45 days ago

Really good team, hope Wilco breaks the AB's scrum… a bit surprised that du Toit not in match day but Zach definitely not going to let us down. His been really good of the bench. Can’t wait GO SMASH THEM BOKS!!

c
cnw 45 days ago

The starting AB pack is strong - probably the toughest tight five to crack (perhaps Paddy might have added something). So as an AB supporter I am slightly relieved Louw is starting as the AB impact bench has no where

near the same mass / power.

S
Snash 45 days ago

He is injured

B
Bazzallina 45 days ago

Okay so SFM gets the start over Manie guess that was a question people were asking and expect there are different camps on this one but either way attacking selections

Are any Bok fans suprised TdT not playing ? and understand the quality of the others but any chance this is letting our beloved ABs off the hook a teeny bit ?

And is Marco selected to try and nullify the 2 ABs loosies on the bench?

Kurt-Lee gets the 11 ( had him in my squad pick) feel amongst Bok fans bit of love out there for Hooker and played well at the tin last year so right or wrong or don’t matter ?

c
cnw 45 days ago

Nullify and respond to mid field energy too with Esterheizen - against France he played in the pack and in the midfield when needed - was brilliant. The only difference is that in Cobus they have a beast lock replacement too. Will be interesting how they manage the subs - they may shift Esterheizen in on their feeds at lineout and add him to the inevitable maul etc and put van Staden in the midfield etc. And switch him out on defence. Either way a potent combination.

S
Snash 45 days ago

Tdt injured

Q
Quincy79 45 days ago

No, Wilco with Ox best scrummagers in world. TdT better with open play but Zachary even better in open play than Thomas. This forward pack was chosen to scrum All Blacks into the ground.

p
proooooovince 45 days ago

Marco and Esterhuizen on as loosies. Plus you still have Wiese for the locks. It’s a 5.5-2.5 not a 5-3.

N
NoLongerARuck 45 days ago

Not surprised to Porthen on the bench but very surprised to see Thomas Du Toit not selected

G
GrahamVF 45 days ago

Got a niggle - Each side is going to use at least nine props through this series.

p
proooooovince 45 days ago

Funny fact, not a single player in the 23 who is based in Europe…

And then a large Japanese contingent.

G
Gameon 45 days ago

Very interesting! Jasper Wiese was at Leicester for a stint and I think that’s it!

R
RG 45 days ago

This is our strongest possible Springbok team that we can select if everyone is fit! It is going to be one massive clash on Saturday! The top 2 teams battling it out for the nr.1 spot on the rankings! Can’t wait!

J
JW 45 days ago

that we can select if everyone is fit!

Do you mean it’s the strongest team simply because everyone is fit, or that this is the team you would have selected too?

N
NoLongerARuck 45 days ago

In terms of the starters possibly. Kolisi not available and some might argue hes part of the strongest squad. Also Thomas Du Toit not there not to mention the missing RG Snyman and Kwagga Smith due to injury

H
HS 45 days ago

Great team! Unfortunate for Siya to be injured. Thomas du Toit and Sadie will likely feature later in the series. Van Staden offers another option at hooker, which leaves the option open to use 3 different loose head props.

p
proooooovince 45 days ago

Yeah I also think we will see some rotation among the fatties during the series.

They’ve got a lot of power up front, but also a lot of speed. Esterhuizen to go to flank if the forwards are gassed in the last 30mins.
