The injury clouds hanging over star All Blacks Cam Roigard, Will Jordan and Damian McKenzie have been quelled ahead of the first Test in the Greatest Rivalry series, with both outside backs named in Dave Rennie’s team to play the Springboks in Johannesburg.

For Roigard, Saturday’s Test will be just his second against the Springboks, having only faced the world champions off the bench in a warm-up game ahead of the 2023 Rugby World Cup.

The team naming has also confirmed the return of New Zealand captain Ardie Savea, who was a late arrival on tour due to rest, but will be injected straight back into the starting line-up at No.8. Savea joins hooker Codie Taylor in playing his 110th Test for the All Blacks.

Also named in the starting forward pack are Ethan de Groot and Tyrel Lomax up front, Josh lord and Fabian Holland in the second row, and Tupou Vaa’i and Luke Jacobson in the loose forwards.

In the backline, Ruben Love joins Roigard in the halves, with a midfield duo of Jordie Barrett and Quinn Tupaea looking to continue their evolving partnership. Josh Moorby joins McKenzie and Jordan in the back three, in what will be his first game against South Africa.

Also making their first appearances against the Boks, but off the bench, will be rising loose forward stars Anton Segner and Peter Lakai. The duo join Asafo Aumua, George Bower and Fletcher Newell as forward reserves, while Kyle Preston, Anton Lienert-Brown and Leroy Carter have all won the race to the final matchday team selections as back replacements.

“After all the build-up and anticipation, our whole touring squad is excited to get this first Test underway,” Rennie said.

“We have selected a balanced mix of big-match, experienced players and younger players who have earned the right to play in this first Test.

“The first three franchise games have exposed our newer players to the way South African teams play and have been fantastic in helping us build combinations and develop the game we want to play.

“We know the Test series will be a huge step up. We’re well aware of what the Springboks will bring to the contest and the pressure that will come to bear.  They are number one in the world, playing at their spiritual home in front of their passionate fans, so we will have to be at our very best on Saturday.”

Mostly as expected.

On the bench I would definitely have gone for Reiko over ALB, and Numia over Bower.

Reiko has looked extremely sharp in the games he has played. Seems a new player on attack, making great passes, and enjoying having some space to do his thing rather than pick the perfect line playing flat. he looks genuinely capable of breaking the game open at the moment. His defence is also still as good as it was.

Very disappointed with the 5/3 bench split. When we get into 60 mins plus I would rather have Darry coming on with fresh legs to smash rucks than an outside back. Making use of an outside back is going to be dependent on how well the forwards are doing. Carter might come on and not touch the ball. The drop off in the carry-clean in the last 20 minutes against the bulls was very noticeable. As it was in 2024 test at Ellis Park. I hope for the best but it seems like lessons not being learned.

Predictions:

1. Early yellow card for Jacobson or Vaa’i for head contact.

2. SA win the last 20 mins by 10

3. Additional yellow card for discipline in the last 20 mins.

4. Four tries a piece - result decided by discipline and goal kicking.

Too generous N. Lessons defintiely not learned. Needed to be brave. Anything but. I just cannot see this team surviving the Boks, especially if they go 6-2. No lock reserve? Yet three

back reserves? Crazy? I predict it will be pretty even until the ABs relatively inexperienced impact forwards get wiped out. There is a big difference between looking good against a club team and playing these Boks. 15 point loss not unduly pessimistic.

Yeah I agree Reiko was one of the better players for me in the warm up. Maybe they are looking to the future?

And indeed, you have loads of speed in the first 15 and on the bench, but who is going to run the engine room in the last 20?

Lord has the skills over Darry. I thought they’d go one lock and one loose on the bench though… it’s going to be a slog for the three starting locks!

A very good team.

You can debate Lord over Darry, or Bower on the bench instead of Numia, but overall, it’s a very very good team. They’re going to have to run their socks off… The idea is really to push the Boks and their forwards to the breaking point.

Everyone said Darry is certain to start but he doesnt even make the 23. Couldnt have done more to get selected. Even so fairly predictable team and good to see two mobile loose forwards on the bench who should do well to counter the bomb squad

Not an unexpected 23. Major surprise is Lord over Darry. No lock cover on the bench therefore no Patty. Nice to see Moorby he’s been great, no Fehi tho… I thought Numia might get on the bench after last week.

Does that mean both locks do 80mins?

Who will go to lock if one goes down? Vaa’i I guess right? But he is already starting. So if it’s only him either way there will be some tired locks on the field at the end. Or can Segner or Lakai do a job there?

So if we think about it, they’ve picked two young and mobile locks that they think can last the 80 minutes. I just wonder if scrum time they will pay the price, it’s the tight 5 that matters not just the proppies.

I like the look of this 23 .. with one comment .. Lord ahead of Darry?? Is Darry injured?

Does Darry jump at 2 or 4? Because Lord jumps at 2
