The domestic sevens competition in Kenya is heating up, with defending champions KCB sending a strong message to the rest of the competition with victory at the Kabeberi 7s.

Heading into the third leg of the National 7s Circuit, the official halfway point of the competition, the defending champions had claimed victory in the opening round at the Prinsloo Sevens, before collapsing to finish in fifth at the Dala Sevens a fortnight ago.

However, spearheaded by Kenyan HSBC SVNS sarts George Ooro and Mike Wekesa, KCB fired back emphatically at the RFUEA Grounds in Nairobi, sweeping through their pool stages and claiming the final in a tense 14-12 win over Strathmore Leos.

Ooro and Wekesa proved the difference scoring the two tries, while co-captain Brian Wahinya delivered critical conversions over Strathmore, their captain Gabriel Ayimba picking up a double in reply.

It proved to be a significant result for Strathmore despite falling at the final hurdle, the side having suffered a tragic loss earlier in the week, Ugandan international Hamza Muhaise having passed away suddenly last week after collapsing following a training session.

The result proved a poignant one for the Strathmore side, with Ayimba paying tribute to their former teammate.

“We wanted to play for Hamza,” Ayimba told The Standard.

“His death affected all of us, but we knew he would have wanted us to fight and give our best.”

Despite the final disappointment, Strathmore will take a lot of confidence and motivation to build on, especially pushing so many established sides throughout the tournament.

The resulting title victory sees KCB climb back over rivals Kabras Sugar in the overall table, who crashed out in the quarterfinals in Nairobi, with Kenya Harlequins sitting in third.

Other results from the weekend saw Mwamba RFC Ladies defend the women’s title, defeating Kenya Harlequin Queens 12-7, while in Division Two, NYS Spades defeated the Kabete Stallions 14-0 to earn promotion and return back to Division One.

The competition will now turn to the Driftwood Sevens in Mombasa this weekend, signalling the commencement of a tense second half of the circuit.
