Connacht have secured the future of Shamus Hurley-Langton after the influential back-rower agreed a new deal through to the 2026/27 season.

The 26-year-old New Zealander has become a key figure since arriving in Galway in 2022, establishing himself as a fan favourite and earning the club’s Player of the Year award for 2023/24.

Hurley-Langton has delivered consistent output across his four seasons in green, scoring 16 tries in 64 appearances in total.

He’s hit new heights in Galway this season, his try-scoring antics having been central to Connacht’s recent upturn in form.

The 6’1, 108kg loose-forward has crossed the white-wash four times in his last five games alone.

Most frequently found on the openside, the Taranaki-born Hurley-Langton can play across the back-row.

“It’s clear we’re building something special here in the club, and I want to play my part in the success that I believe we are working towards,” said Hurley-Langton. “I want to thank all the fans who have made me feel so welcome since arriving to Connacht four years ago. It’s a special place with special people. For now I’m focused on these next two games, and help us reach the playoffs”.

Despite his surname, the former Manawatu is not qualified to play for Ireland. Not yet anyway.

Connacht DoR Stuart Lancaster gave a ringing endorsement of the New Zealander’s decision to stay with the Westerners: “Shamus’s new deal is another massive boost for everyone in the club.

“I’ve got to know Shamus well this season and really enjoy coaching him. I feel there is still even more to come from him, and these last few games have shown just how good a player he already is.

“His dynamism on the ball and his relentless work rate at the breakdown is top class and he will be another huge asset for us as we head into next season.”
