Watch: Ex-NRL flyers Radradra, Te Whare score doubles for BlueRevs
Former NRL flyers Semi Radradra and Valynce Te Whare scored doubles on Saturday as Shizuoka BlueRevs claimed their second win of the 2025/26 campaign, beating Mitsubishi Sagamihara Dynaboars 47-36 at home.
Shizuoka started the Japan Rugby League One season with a 12-point win over the Yokohama Cannon Eagles before losing their next three. They fell to reigning champions Toshina Brave Lupus Tokyo in a thriller, followed by defeats to Urayasu D-Rocks and the Saitama Wild Knights.
Following last weekend’s 37-22 loss to the Wild Knights, the BlueRevs looked ahead to a round five matchup against a Dynaboars outfit equally as eager for a win. Both sides had lost three of their first four matches, but a chance to turn their fortunes around awaited.
Radradra was first to strike at Yamaha Stadium, skipping through tackle attempts to cross just inside the left sideline. Malgene Ilaua picked the ball up from the base of an attacking scrum before shovelling the ball off to Radradra, about 15 metres out from the try line.
The Fijian international broke one tackle before offering a goosestep to the Dynaboars’ defensive line, with the stop-start move proving effective so close to the chalk. Makoto Tsutsuguchi failed to add the extras off the kicking tee, which added to the upcoming drama.
Shun Miyake reduced the deficit to two with a Dynaboars penalty goal in the 10th minute, and then the BlueRevs went down to 14 men for 20 minutes. Sylvian Mahuza was shown a red card, and the visitors made the most of their one-player advantage.
Yuki Miyazato gave the Dynaboars the lead for the first time, crossing for a try in the 16th minute. Tsutsuguchi brought the teams level with a penalty soon after, before the Dynaboars regained their advantage with a Matt Vaega five-pointer.
Futo Yamaguchi and Murray Dougles touched down for a try each as the BlueRevs gained some control and their lead on the scoreboard, but the point-scoring drama wasn’t done there. The Dynaboars scored one last try before the break, taking a two-point lead into the sheds.
There was another score change early in the second term, with Tsutsuguchi adding a try and conversion to his impressive points tally. Shizuoka didn’t score for another 10, until Radradra set up Te Whare with a draw and pass along the left touchline.
Kyo Yoshida briefly made it a one-score game with a try beyond the 60-minute mark, only for Radradra to strike back moments later. Radradra picked up a loose ball before splitting two Dynaboars defenders, diving over about five metres left of the sticks.
Kakeru Okumura piled on another five points in the minutes that followed, nailing both a conversion and a penalty attempt. It was a 13-point ball game before Vaega completed a double with an effort in the 79th minute.
In the final play of the match, Te Whare got the ball unmarked out wide, racing about half the length of the field to improve the team’s points difference that little bit more. The BlueRevs have a 2-3 record on the season, sitting in seventh place after five rounds.
