‘Little bit of Ben Smith': Breakdown panel compares All Blacks bolter to former star

Two ex-All Blacks have discussed whether versatile Hurricanes winger Josh Moorby is playing his way into Dave Rennie’s first squad on June 22.

Moorby added another try to his 2026 tally for the Wellington-based franchise in their 45-28 victory at Hnry Stadium against the Highlanders.

The 27-year-old scored his 13th try of the Super Rugby Pacific campaign and showcased his ability to slot into fullback if needed, like the Te Awamutu born winger has done on multiple occasions this season.

With Highlanders winger Caleb Tangitau going down with a ruptured Achilles two weeks ago against the Chiefs, a vacant spot has opened up in Rennie’s squad.

Moorby will be battling the likes of Chay Fihaki, Leroy Carter, Emoni Narawa, Sevu Reece, and Jacob Ratamatavuki Kneepkens for an outside-back spot.

Throw Fehi Fineanganofo into the mix, if Rennie opts to pick him, and the newly appointed coaching staff have some contentious decisions to make before the 34-man squad is announced in late June.

Former All Black winger Jeff Wilson is a strong believer in Moorby, comparing him to 84-Test stalwart, Ben Smith.

“I said a week ago that someone had an opportunity to play their way into the All Blacks over the next month, over the playoffs, and the teams that are alive and playing well, I thought that’s going to help someone get in,” Wilson said on The Breakdown on Sky Sport.

“That’s where Josh Moorby sits right now. He’s done some special things this season, I like the versatility, can play both positions 15 and on the wing exceptionally well.

“Someone mentioned the fact there’s a little bit of Ben Smith about him, the fact that he has high work rate. You saw the physicality, run hard with the ball.

“But personally, he’s in a conversation. I think the whole landscape has changed with the loss of Caleb Tangitau. I think the out-and-out wing that we are looking for, does that mean the flexibility that Josh Moorby gives you, because he can play wing and fullback.

“Because I think ideally you’d like the opportunity to have a six two bench, and that means you’d like to have a wing who can play fullback.”

Mils Muliaina, who played both fullback and wing for the All Blacks, explained that if it comes down to a pure wing shootout, that’s where the 27-year-old may miss out.

“He’s certainly putting his hand up. I think you know what he showed last night, particularly when he sort of came out with a counter attack, is his ability to be able to do that, he’s got plenty of speed.

“Cully [Christian Cullen] talked about his work rate as well. He manipulates that sort of defensive line because he’s roaming around, and he came back early, and so it’s hard not to sort of look where he can get to.

“He will have a bit of competition, but the other side of that, he does bring a little bit of versatility. Where does he fit in terms of the others? I think there’s definitely competition in terms of an out and out wing, and that’s probably where he could possibly miss out.”

58-Test former All Black Christian Cullen endorses Moorby’s chances of becoming an All Black in 2026, saying one of his main strengths is his ability to find the try line in tough situations.

“Moorby would look pretty good in a black jersey, wouldn’t he? Powerful winger or fullback, he’s just got an eye for the try line there, his work rate is massive,” Cullen said on Saturday night’s Sky Sport broadcast.

Yea that one will be interesting, a full competition before the World Cup. Great preparation for players anyway, not so much for the NH sides who will have had the 6N many months prior.

Really, Wilson hasn’t heard the Rennie’s already selected his 34 rumour, or he doesn’t believe it?

Then Rennie said it’s about adding and subtracting. Keeping up with what the All Blacks head coach has said is important.

I don’t know, I have doubts about Moorby. Is he really a Test-level player?

My instinct says no. I get the feeling that a lot of Super Rugby players would score plenty of tries in this Hurricanes team.

And then there’s his stint in France last year, which was far from impressive. 2 tries in 16 matches! He was pretty insignificant over there.

I also watched the match against the Landers closely, and overall I found JRK more convincing. I think the Highlanders fullback has more potential and fits the profile better to join an All Blacks squad thanks to his versatility at 14/15. His kicking game also seems more developed than Moorby’s. I’d say he’s slightly better under the high ball as well.

Of course, I could be wrong — we’ll see over the next few matches.

Interesting stat about Moorby in France.

I think you’re right Blackmania, the Hurricanes outside backs are playing well but they are benefiting a lot from the work being done inside them. JRK looks consistently good in an underperforming landers side, I’m more interested to see how he would go, perhaps in the 14 jersey

No loyalty to AB’s incumbents, while consistent and disciplined SRPacific work ethics will be rewarded rather than any flashy sporadic few and far between moments…

Moorby does do one thing very well that has been an Achilles heel for many a winger anywhere and in any comp in the world that sounds ridiculously simple but he consistently catches passes he has very good hands I have probs put “ the curse” on him now

When you listen to these Kiwi pundits, it’s like they have 3 world class players in every position with another 3 waiting in the wings. Unfortunately when you look at the reality, there are holes even in the first choice 23 with many questions for Rennie to answer.

Moorby is a solid player and quite consistent. But with so many players who can play 15, it would surprise me if he’s in the initial 34.

we are talking 4th, 5th, and 6th selections here, precisely because there is three top contenders.

Only at backup 9 for a 23 SB and maybe kind of 6

Yes Moorby should at least be in the AB mix either at fullback or wing. I have another smokey to consider in the Chiefs replacement for the injured DM I.e. I .Hutchinson who played well for them against the Crusaders and could easily have turned that match in their favor both defensively & on attack. This player has many of the skills of one W Jordan, nuff said. We are not short of expertise in the winger/full back position are we.

Sullivan, Narawa, JRK, Fihaki, might all hve been overtaken by Harkin, Moorby, and Hutchinson.
