Hong Kong China saw a massive jump in tourism across April 2026, with preliminary figures released by the city’s tourism board citing the Hong Kong Sevens as a major factor in the economic upturn.

The 50th iteration of the Hong Kong Sevens kicked off the new look HSBC SVNS World Championship last month, the event selling over 130,000 tickets at Kai Tak Sports Park across the weekend.

However, the events leading up to the weekend, including at Hong Kong Disneyland, parties at the Happy Valley racecourse, and the Hong Kong 10s at the Hong Kong Football Club also contributed to a massive surge in international tourists to the city.

At the time, the ticketing milestones were heavily celebrated as the biggest weekend ever in the history of the SVNS circuit.

“Hong Kong China Rugby is proud that the sevens is today acknowledged as one of Asia’s top sporting weekends as well as one of world sport’s true bucket list events,” Chris Brooke, the Chairman of Hong Kong China Rugby said at the official launch ahead of the tournament.

“Closer to home, the sevens’ true importance lies in the role which it has had throughout the decades as the rally point for rugby friends and families the world over.

“The Cathay/HSBC Hong Kong Sevens also has an impact far beyond the stadium lights, both in terms of funding the vast majority of our rugby activities, and in generating economic benefits for our city with an estimated US $97 million in spending generated in 2025 alone.”

The figures released by the Hong Kong Tourism Board late last week saw over 4.2 million arrivals during the month of April, with over 410,000 international arrivals, a jump of 20 per cent on last year’s figures.

The first four months of 2026 have pointed to an overall tourism increase of 15 per cent year-on-year over 2025, which has also come despite concerns about the global impact of several conflicts worldwide, most notably in the Middle East.

The numbers come at a good time for Hong Kong China Rugby, the event being a key revenue stream for the governing body after the sport took a massive financial hit during the COVID-19 pandemic.

With the economic output likely to be even better in 2026, it will prove a valuable windfall at the right time as the 15s national side is set to compete at the Rugby World Cup for the first time in 2027.

The side is set for a busy year of preparation in 2026, defending their Asia Rugby Championship title, playing a two-match series against a Japan Select XV side, World Rugby Nations Cup fixtures in July against Samoa, Chile and Uruguay, and a November fixture against Portugal, with uncapped matches against the ACT Brumbies and Japan XV.

It also comes as the governing body tries to push the men’s and women’s sevens sides to higher representation, both competing in the Melrose Claymores Invitational tournaments last month at home, with the men’s side defeating Japan 19-15 in the final.

The Hong Kong China men’s sevens side made it to the SVNS 3 semi-final in Dubai earlier this year before being knocked out 24-19 by Canada, with both sevens sides also set to compete at the 20th Asian Games in September.

“We’ve come close to the Olympics and World Series, and those are the things we all want to do,” Hong Kong China Sevens head coach Paul John said in April.

“We have plans for players moving between both [codes], they will all be available for the Asian Games and Nations Cup.

“It’s an opportunity for players to show what they can do.”

Beyond the sport, the Hong Kong Tourism Board also plans to use the figures to attract even more visitors to the Fragrant Harbour, particularly as all signs point to another successful weekend when the Sevens returns in 2027.

“It will flexibly allocate resources and attract high-value visitors, with a view to maximising the economic contributions of the tourism industry,” the board said in a statement.
