Ulster’s hopes of lifting the EPCR Challenge Cup have been dealt a major setback after Iain Henderson was handed a three-game suspension following his red card against the Stormers.

It also could potentially rule him out of Andy Farrell’s Ireland plans for the inaugural Nations Championship.

The Ulster captain was sanctioned for a crocodile roll that saw him fall onto the leg of a Stormers’ Bok back-row Deon Fourie during the Round 17 BKT United Rugby Championship clash on Friday, May 8, 2026.

It was a brutal injury that could well end Fourie’s career. Stormers director of rugby John Dobson says the 39-year-old Rugby World Cup winner could be sidelined for several months after suffering serious damage to his knee in the incident.

Given his age, a return to professional rugby could prove a mountain to climb.

Initially shown a yellow card by referee Andrea Piardi in the ninth minute, the decision was later upgraded to a 20-minute red card upon review.

A disciplinary hearing has since confirmed the lock will serve a three-match ban, ruling him out of next week’s Challenge Cup final against Montpellier in Bilbao, as well as key URC fixtures.

Henderson appeared before an independent disciplinary committee comprising Roddy MacLeod (Chair), Alasdair Craig and Jonathan Rennie, and accepted that he had committed an act of foul play warranting a red card.

The committee deemed the offence to be reckless, applying a mid-range entry point of six weeks. However, Henderson’s exemplary record, just one previous suspension in a 15-year career; along with his remorse, immediate concern for the injured opponent and full co-operation during the process, earned him maximum mitigation.

That resulted in a 50 per cent reduction, bringing the ban down to three weeks.

The suspension means double British & Irish Lions tourist will miss Ulster’s URC clash with Glasgow Warriors on May 15 and, most significantly, the Challenge Cup final against Montpellier on May 22. He could also miss a potential URC quarter-final on May 30, depending on Ulster’s progress.

In addition, the fixture list notes he will be unavailable for Ireland’s Nations Championship match against Australia on July 4, should Ulster not make the URC quarters.

Fixtures Iain Henderson is unavailable for
Ulster v Glasgow Warriors, May 15, R18 BKT URC
Ulster v Montpellier Hérault, May 22, EPCR Challenge Cup Final
Ulster v TBC, May 30, Quarter-Final BKT URC*
Australia v Ireland, July 4, Nations Championship**

Ulster fan here. Gutted as will weaken our row significantly against a big Montpelier pack but definitely the right decision. Awful clean out
