Theo McFarland joins the list of Saracens stars moving to France

Saracens have confirmed that back-row Theo McFarland will leave the club at the end of the season “to take up an opportunity in France.”
Though his next destination has not yet been confirmed, RugbyPass reported in December that the Samoa international had met with Ronan O’Gara’s La Rochelle, with his contract in London expiring at the end of the season.
The 30-year-old has become the third frontline star at Saracens who will cross the Channel at the end of the season, with Marco Riccioni joining Perpignan and Tom Willis making a high-profile move to Bordeaux-Begles.

With Willis and McFarland leaving the StoneX Stadium at the end of the season, there will be a gaping hole in Saracens’ back-row. However, the club have done a fine job in replacing the pair by bringing in England and Leicester Tigers lock/flanker George Martin and Bath No.8 Alfie Barbeary.
McFarland, who has also represented Samoa in basketball, seeks to end his five-year stay at Saracens on a high, with the club in the hunt for the Gallagher PREM play-offs with three rounds remaining.
“I have absolutely loved my time here. The people, the memories and everything that comes with being part of this club,” the 2023 PREM winner said.
“Thank you to everyone connected to Saracens for the support over the last five years. I am proud and grateful to have been part of this special place.
“I will continue to give everything I have in these final few games and help finish the season strongly.

Saracens director of rugby Mark McCall added: “Theo joined the club five years ago and has developed tremendously during his time here. Through his dedication, professionalism and hard work both on and off the pitch, he has grown into an outstanding rugby player and athlete.
“It has been a pleasure to watch his progression, not only as a player but also as a person. Over the years we have seen Theo become a valued part of the club and he has always carried himself with humility, care and complete dedication in everything he does. He has been a joy to have around the environment, and we wish Theo and his family every success for the future.”
