The 18-year-old St Kentigern’s fullback was tipped to join the Warriors but has made the decision to stay in rugby and follow a similar path to Rieko Ioane.

His Sevens debut will be much anticipated in rugby circles after playing for three years in the St Kentigern 1st XV before playing for the New Zealand schoolboys in 2017.

Nanai will join fellow schoolboy rival Caleb Clarke – son of former All Black Eroni Clake – in the squad. Clarke has been named as the 13th man.

“Etene is a young player with huge potential and he’s enjoying his rugby – it’s exciting for him and his family to get this opportunity,” Sevens coach Clark Laidlaw said.

“Etene, Luke and Caleb have been great in our environment and will add a lot to our game.

New Zealand men’s sevens squad: Scott Curry, Tim Mikkelson, Teddy Stanaway, Joe Ravouvou, Luke Masirewa, Vilimoni Koroi, Sam Dickson, Andrew Knewstubb, Regan Ware, Kurt Baker, Etene Nanai-Seturo, Sione Molia. 13th man: Caleb Clark.
