Proceedings began in Northampton, where Saints moved past Castres Olympique with a relatively controlled performance at Franklin’s Gardens, winning 49-41. The home side did enough across the contest to secure progression, although Castres had the better of the earlier exchanges before discipline cost the Frenchmen.

RC Toulon brought an end to DHL Stormers’ campaign (28-27) in a contest that came right down to the wire, while Toulouse navigated their way beyond Bristol Bears 59-26 to maintain their pursuit of yet another European title.

Glasgow Warriors also booked their place in the last eight the hard way after seeing off the Bulls at Scotstoun. The 25-21 game was another excruciatingly tight affair, with Franco Smith’s side extending their European journey for another week at least.

The final fixture on Saturday paired Sale Sharks and Harlequins in an all-Gallagher PREM tie. George Ford’s side edged ahead to eliminate their domestic rivals on a 26-17 scoreline, Ford’s boot proving the difference.

Sunday’s action began with the holders producing another assured display. Union Bordeaux Bègles overcame Leicester Tigers 64-14 with minimal fuss, their stars running in an avalanche of tries in what was a one-sided bout against Geoff Parling’s Tigers.

The Round of 16 concluded in Dublin, where Leinster faced a determined challenge from Edinburgh, who hadn’t read the script.

The visitors remained competitive throughout thanks to Leinster’s midfield coughing up ball, but the home side’s superiority ultimately proved enough to carry them through as the final quarter-finalists on a 49-31 scoreline.
