One Lion in, two Lions out: England name team for All Blacks

British and Irish Lions duo Ollie Chessum and Tommy Freeman have failed to recover from their injuries to make Steve Borthwick’s England team to take on the All Blacks at Twickenham’s Allianz Stadium this Saturday.

Second-row Chessum sustained a foot injury in the closing stages of England’s 38-18 victory over Fiji last Saturday, while winger Freeman picked up a hamstring problem shortly before.

England captain Maro Itoje will now partner Alex Coles in the second-row instead, who started alongside Chessum against Mick Byrne’s side, with Itoje making a rare appearance from the bench.

Freeman has been replaced on the wing by Tom Roebuck, who missed the Fiji contest due to an ankle injury.

Freddie Steward, who was also absent from the win over Fiji with a hand injury, has also come back into the starting XV, as Borthwick has largely reverted to the matchday 23 that triumphed over Australia 25-7 at the beginning of the month.

The only changes to the team that took on the Wallabies are Ollie Lawrence at outside centre, where Freeman started, Coles in the engine room, Chandler Cunningham-South taking what was Coles’ place on the bench and the versatile Marcus Smith replacing fellow Lion Fin Smith in the much-vaunted ‘Bomb Squad’.

While Borthwick has lost two Lions, he has welcomed back another one, Will Stuart, who missed the Fiji clash with Asher Opoku-Fordjour taking his place on the bench instead.

“I’m pleased with the progress we are making,” said Borthwick.

“Without doubt, New Zealand are one of the best teams in the world and facing them is always a special challenge.”

“Playing in front of a packed-out Allianz Stadium means a huge amount to the players. The support we’ve had throughout this series has been outstanding, and we want it loud again on Saturday.”

Nice of Borthwick to give Razor a bit of notice! I wonder if he will change anything in response. I would start Tamaiti, give Ethan a rest and bring Bower off the bench. I would also swap out Kirifi for Parker on the bench, to counter the height and power of Cunningham-South. I’d love to see him persevere with Faing’anuku at 13, but given Proctor came off the bench last week, I think Proctor will slot in at 13, and LF will go to 11. I’d love to see Reiko in place of Carter at 14 - more height and experience. Reiko will have great memories of Twickenham too and will be fizzing.

So Earl is the midfield cover and Steward covering wing?

I was really looking forward to this game . . . . and sadly my enthusiasm has drained after seeing the England 23. Shame. I think this will be Borthwick 0 - Robertson 4.

Given it looks like SA will achieve their “Grand Slam tour” and potentially NZ also, it does suggest the SH is playing much better rugby than NH at the moment.

Too soon to say. If England wins (which you can) and Ireland win (which they certainly can) then we can’t say anything for sure.

There is something to be said perhaps for the NH teams being a little underdone. France looked very unfit. Ireland have looked rusty. England seems to have hit their straps quickly - hence why I think they may beat the ABs.

Ireland will have a few games under their belt by the time they play the Boks. So these two tests could be quite close.

Although I hope not. SH til I die.

I don’t think so. It’s just the Springboks are so far ahead of everyone it looks that way.

Short answer is yes it does, the rankings are a pretty fair reflection on the state of play atm imo

All Blacks vs England (my selection):

1 DeGroot, 2 Taylor, 3 Newell, 4 Barrett, 5 Holland, 6 Parker, 7 Savea, 8 Lakai, 9 Roigard, 10 Barrett, 11 Fainga'anuka, 12 Tupaea, 13 Proctor, 14 Carter, 15 Jordan

16 Taukeo'aho, 17 Williams, 18 Tosi, 19 Lord, 20 Sititi, 21 Kirifi, 22 Ratima, 23 McKenzie

The All Blacks will need two very mobile loose forwards on the bench to counter Curry and Pollock, so I think Parker will start at 6 and be replaced by Sititi in second half. Same with Kirifi replacing Lakai and Savea shifting to 8.

I cant see what Proctor has done to earn back the 13 jersey, Parker the same. Carter will be lucky to hold his place after last weekend’s stupidity. Also Robertson has never gone for a 6-2 bench split so don’t think he’ll start now.

Let’s be honest here.

Has Fin done anything special to really nail down his no 10 .

He is steady yes but no magic.

Like ford.

We will see Saturday now the team is playing well if Ford can move 5 yards up the pitch and attack the line a bit more .

If not , get rid

,FINALLY

f
fl 31 days ago

Why would you get rid of Ford on the basis of one bad performance?

L
LE 31 days ago

I think Fin brings something that is difficult to spot and is often missed by those that criticise him. He holds Englands attacking shape for longer allowing us to play for more phases before resorting to the boot. When he plays he might not look anything special most of the time but the backline attack looks far far better. Marcus looks spectacular but evryone else around him looks worse and Fords ok but kicks too much and too early instead of taking the ball to the line like he does for Sale

So full steam ahead with kick/chase it is then, as predicted!

P
PMcD 31 days ago

Can’t wait Ed - the Ford & Steward kick chase show, the peak highlight of the rugby season to date. I wonder if the AB’s will get so bored they switch off like we do? 🤣🤣

Fully expect a game plan akin to that of Australia with Ford being in at 10 and Steward back in at 15. Either SB can't make you his mind on a fly half so Fin Smith will start again against Argentina or he's now decided after going with Fin in the 6N earlier in the year that Ford is now the man to lead us into next year's 6N and I'm not quite sure I agree with that if it is the case. After all you would assume that Fin will only get better with the more tests he plays against high end opposition like the Kiwis.

That being said I think it's quietly a must win game for England and if he's choosing a 10 he thinks will offer that then I can't really argue.

P
PMcD 31 days ago

I’m with you. It doesn’t feel like we are putting our best foot forward and are playing nowhere near where we were in the 6N’s.

It does feel like a missed opportunity this Autumn but it’s not the worst thing to happen given where we are with injuries.

m
mh 31 days ago

Just seems crazy to not give Fin the exposure, unless he’s letting him rest up for the Boks…I can’t see Ford leading us into the next WC so we need to move past him and develop the other players. He keeps banging on about team cohesion after all.

L
LE 31 days ago

2 injured, 1 dropped so 3 lions out.

Personally i would have preferred to see Fin at 10

B
B T 31 days ago

You aren't the only one who wanted to see Fin at 10. I assume we are going to see a game plan more akin to that of against Australia which is why he's gone Ford. If not it just seems like he can't quite make his mind up but at this moment it looks like perhaps ford is the man who will start the 6N at 10 to.

m
mh 31 days ago

CCS and Genge were both awesome against Fiji, should be starters…Ford is always going to spark debate, i’d rather see Fin Smith given the opportunity if Marcus is no longer considered at 10 and where is Arundell?

Doesn’t take a rocket scientist to work out boring Borthers game plan…Kick, Kick, Kick

A
AD 31 days ago

England’s only to box kick? I’m hoping this is cunning deception by the incredibly smart Borthwick to lure Razor into planning all week to only defend box kicking!

Meanwhile, England will surprise the ABs, and us, with a running and passing game, beating the ABs in the wide channels with pace and accuracy, with wings actually getting the ball via multiple 15-20 phases of play, and scoring tries when in the ABs 22!

P
PMcD 31 days ago

1. Ford to kick

2. Steward to try and catch

3. If he doesn’t 3x7’s win the ball, create ruck and go back to 1.

If NZ need any further help, just watch the AUS game on replay as it will be very similar.

Naming our teams on a Tuesday now too.

Borthwick must surely have a tattoo of Rassie on his bum. Steve-O styles.
