'I want people to watch what this team is about': Sean Lynn's rallying cry as Wales end wait for win

Sean Lynn afforded himself a pleased look at full-time after Wales’ 50-19 victory over the Springbok Women.

He took on the role of Wales head coach after guiding Gloucester Hartpury to Premiership Women’s Rugby dominance. The side claimed three league titles in as many years.

Since he first led Wales in the 2025 Guinness Women’s Six Nations, Lynn had only seen his team experience victory once in the 15 Test matches he had presided over.

During this time, his team have received back-to-back wooden spoons in the Women’s Six Nations and were dumped out of Women’s Rugby World Cup 2025 at the group stage, where they finished with defeat to Fiji.

Coming into WXV Global Series, there was a different feel around Wales. Ashley Beck and Steve Salvin, once interim assistant coaches, are now with the team full-time.

That’s before you even consider the litany of backroom staff that have now been with the team five months and brought greater consistency to the Wales camp.

Against the Springbok Women, Wales combined forward dominance with scintillating attack to cross the whitewash eight times and end a 14-month wait for a Test rugby win.

Sisilia Tuipulotu scored a brace, while Courtney Keight, Seren Lockwood, Maisie Davies, Kelsey Jones, Lisa Neumann and Alex Callender all breached the South Africa defensive line.

Next week, the USA Women’s Eagles will visit Cardiff Arms Park and Lynn has called on Wales supporters to pile into the venue and cheer on the national team.

“As a group of staff we had a massive meeting in July,” Lynn told BBC Sport.

“We worked hard, with the intent of how we wanted this Welsh DNA [to appear] – you can see evidence of that today.

“I want more people coming next week. I want people to watch what this team is about.”

It was also the perfect Test match return for Alex Callender. The 26-year-old has not played international rugby since Women’s Rugby World Cup 2025 and got on the scoreboard in the second half in the Welsh capital.

A player who typifies the Welsh DNA that Lynn wants to see throughout his team, Callender was named Player of the Match for her efforts.

Reinstalled as co-captain, the loose forward was enthused about what the future may have in store after nearly two years of difficulties.

“I am so proud of the girls,” Callender said. “We can’t look too far ahead and we take each games it comes, but I back the girls who take the field and I am so proud of them.

“[This will give us] massive confidence. We don’t really listen to the criticism that comes from the outside.

“Internally all that matters to us is that we have belief and back each other. If we can carry on doing that, I know this team will go far.”
