Saracens player ratings: Sarries got off to a fast start but their efforts faded dramatically in the second period, where they were restricted to a consolation try from Nick Isiekwe and little else to crow about.

Jamie George’s side looked sharp and threatening early on at Sandy Park and could easily have gone into the break with the lead. Instead, Exeter grew into the contest, took control after half-time and exposed a Saracens side that ran out of ideas, carriers and ultimately belief as the game slipped away, losing 32-12 in the end.

1. Eroni Mawi – 6
Part of a front row that struggled to generate much momentum after the opening exchanges. Replaced shortly after the restart as Saracens searched for answers.

2. Jamie George – 6.5
A massive pump-up speech before kick-off set the tone. Led from the front during the better periods. Appeared to be impeded in the build-up to Exeter’s first try and was unable to complete the tackle on Max Norey. Generally solid before being withdrawn on 54 minutes.

3. Marcus Street – 6
Worked hard without making much impact. Saracens’ scrum never really established dominance and he was replaced at the interval.

4. Maro Itoje – 5.5
Busy as ever and tried to drag his side back into the fight when momentum swung away from them. A few good defensive interventions but not one of his more influential afternoons.

5. Hugh Tizard – 5
Plenty of graft but Exeter found ways through the middle of the field far too often after half-time. Replaced with 14 minutes remaining.

6. Theo McFarland – 4.5
Fell off too many tackles during the opening 40 minutes. Improved slightly in that area after the break but never imposed himself physically before departing on 54 minutes.

7. Ben Earl – 7
Saracens’ most dangerous carrier in the first half. Consistently bent the line, beat defenders for fun and generated valuable front-foot ball. Two penalties against him knocked the score down slightly. Like the rest of the pack, he was starved of opportunities after the interval.

8. Tom Willis – 6.5
Carried relentlessly in the opening period and actually outstripped Earl for volume of carries. Quiet after half-time but produced a superb break on 70 minutes that eventually led to Saracens’ only score of the second half.

9. Charlie Bracken – 4.5
A difficult afternoon. His yellow card effectively extinguished any lingering hopes of a comeback and came during a period when Exeter were tightening the garrote.

10. Fergus Burke – 6.5
Produced the moment of the first half for Sarries with a spellbinding break that looked set to create a try for Rotimi Segun before the TMO intervened. Mixed kicking display and missed a conversion early on. Still one of Saracens’ more threatening attacking players.

11. Rotimi Segun – 7.5
A constant menace out wide. Beat four defenders during a lively first half and looked capable of creating something every time he touched the ball. Unlucky to see a try ruled out following Burke’s break. One of Saracens’ brightest performers.

12. Olly Hartley – 5.5
Had some tidy moments in midfield but struggled to get involved once Exeter tightened their grip on proceedings.

13. Nick Tompkins – 5
A considerable step backwards after last week’s strong showing. Turned over possession twice during the opening period and later coughed up too much ball. Never really found rhythm in attack.

14. Tobias Elliott – 6.5
Finished brilliantly after seven minutes following excellent handling and a classy assist from Max Malins. Outstanding on the front foot and later supplied the final pass for Isiekwe’s try. Unfortunately his defensive work was a major weakness and Exeter targeted his channel with success.

15. Max Malins – 6.5
His beautifully quick assist created the opening try and he looked sharp throughout the first half. Offered composure under the high ball, including an excellent exit after Elliott called a mark.

Replacements – 5
Rhys Carre arrived early and Theo Dan added some energy around the field. Owen Farrell’s introduction briefly raised morale and he converted Isiekwe’s try, while Nathan Michelow made an eye-catching break in the build-up to that score. Isiekwe himself took his try well.
