'My season is over': England's injury problems worsen
England and Sale Sharks flanker Ben Curry has confirmed that his “season is over” after undergoing his second operation of the season.
The 27-year-old missed the Quilter Nations Series after surgery on his hamstring, but returned to action in December in the Investec Champions Cup before being sidelined again.
Sale Sharks director of rugby Alex Sanderson hinted that he could be fit in time for the Guinness Six Nations, and the 14-cap international was named in Steve Borthwick’s squad, initially for rehabilitation.
Curry did not travel to England’s training camp in Girona prior to the Championship, and was replaced in the squad by Jack Kenningham. Though updates on his health have been sparse, he shared on social media on Friday that his season is over.
The message, posted from Finland, presumably came after his second operation of the season, and third in total on his hamstring in his career following another operation in 2023.
“Gutted to say that my season is over…” he wrote on Instagram. “Been a tough few months already, however, feeling really positive about next steps and can’t wait to get cracking with the rehab.”
Following a 2024/25 season where Curry established himself as a starter for England under Borthwick in both the Six Nations and the triumphant series win over Argentina, this has been a catastrophic season for the loose forward.
While England have plenty of options in the back-row, it is a department of the field that Borthwick has tinkered with throughout the Championship and one that was comprehensively outplayed in defeats to Scotland and Ireland.
Curry’s return has not been revealed yet, but he will now be missing for the remainder of Sale’s Gallagher PREM and Investec Champions Cup campaign, where, sitting in seventh with eight league games remaining, they need to be next to flawless to make the play-offs.
It is also probable that England will be without the flanker for the Nations Championship clashes with South Africa, Fiji and Argentina in July.
