Townsend, 29, joins after nearly a decade with Exeter, where he rose through the ranks from the club’s academy system to become a key figure in their senior setup.

He made over 120 appearances for the Chiefs, contributing 20 tries and playing a central role in some of the club’s most successful campaigns, including their Premiership triumph in 2017 and also their historic Premiership title and European Champions Cup double in 2020.

“I’m really excited to be joining Harlequins and starting this next chapter in my career,” said Townsend.

“After so many great years at Exeter, the time felt right for a new challenge – somewhere I can push myself, grow as a player, and contribute to something fresh.

“Harlequins is a club steeped in history – the ambition from within and the environment being built really stood out to me. I can’t wait to get started, meet the lads, and get stuck into pre-season.”

Head Coach, Danny Wilson, added: “We’re delighted to bring Stu on board. He’s a proven performer at the highest level and someone who understands what it takes to win. His experience, especially in pressure moments, will be invaluable to our squad.

“Beyond his technical ability and sharp game management, he’s a competitor — tough, smart, and committed. He’ll bring leadership to our group, and we’re excited to see the impact he’ll have both on and off the field this season.”

How do Australia fit both ‘fetchers’ in side? Could ‘McZano’ be next ‘Pooper’ combo?

Apologies, I haven’t read it all, short on time being Friday and I will loose the comment if I don’t respond quickly to other threads.

But I see you misunderstand when people refer to not having an identity. They are talking about the team’s own identity, as we have been trying to play like other nations. These coaches had an identity, but it was an identity they had brought from another country and pushed it onto the Wallabies, and the results speak for themselves. Under JS we formed an identity, be it very Irish without Sexton and the 9, but the reality is he had a win/lose record of 38%, and I think over the 2025 and 2026 seasons he ran at 33%. Happy to be corrected, but I know it is in that ballpark. DR again was coaching a SR NZ-style high-speed rugby, with a win/lose record of 36%, and the state of the way we played got to the point where the Brumbies coaching team had to be brought in. Now we can say what we want, but if we go back in time, the complaints were heavily around the style of game we played under both these coaches. Now I understand people get excited by a rare win over SA last year, and we jagged a win in a Lions series after the Lions had already wrapped it up. This is great…but we lost, and we every game around these games….We all saw the Wallabies playing too one-dimensional and without width under JS and we all saw we tried to beat the ABs playing their own game (we had no chance of playing this without the conditioning below the Wallabies level) under DR, and both failed.
