Simon Zebo has warned the Vodacom Bulls they will lose tonight’s BKT United Rugby Championship Grand Final at Croke Park if they fall into what he calls the “Leinster trap.”

The former Munster and Ireland wing was speaking ahead of the clash between defending champions Leinster and the Bulls – the fourth play-off meeting between the sides since 2022 and the first back-to-back Grand Final pairing in URC history.

“The Bulls have the most feared pack in the competition. The amount of ball carriers they have, particularly in the back row, is incredible. The dynamism of that loose trio with Hanekom, Coetzee, and Elrigh Louw is outstanding. I think they’re the best ball-carrying back row in the competition.

“If Bulls try to overplay and fall into the Leinster trap of going wide when it’s not really on, then I think Leinster will have enough to get the job done. Simply, if the game becomes wide and expansive, Leinster win. If it turns into a set-piece battle, played close and dominated by the kicking game, the Bulls win.”

Former Ulster back-row Stephen Ferris said failure to win the title would be a “tragedy” for Leinster. “If Leinster don’t win this URC title, it will be a tragedy. With the budget, players and coaches they have, they have to win this trophy. They have the blueprint – last year they stopped the Bulls in their tracks and dominated the physicality stakes.

“If Leinster have gone back and watched last year’s final, they can take a lot of confidence from how they stopped the Bulls’ momentum and got on top physically. Tonight, Leinster have to show they’re the best team in the URC.

“The Bulls look like a side that will play a bit more than last year. They’ve got a cracking team on paper – but can they make it click on the day? Leinster are at home, in front of a big Friday-night crowd. They’ll be hoping to feed off that atmosphere. Croke Park should be a huge positive for Leinster.”

Former Leinster and Ireland outside half Ian Madigan said: “You’ve got two outstanding teams, a genuine rivalry, contrasting strengths and a trophy on the line. Everything about this URC Final suggests we’re in for a special night of rugby. The URC Final will be decided by one thing: who wins the physical battle.

“These are two teams with genuine history. That’s what creates a great rivalry – they’ve both hurt each other before and there’s a chance of redemption for the Bulls after last year’s final. What makes this such an intriguing final is that both teams know exactly where the game will be won and lost. The scrum, the aerial contest and the physical battle are obvious areas, but both sides will have spent all week preparing for them. It’s going to be fascinating to see who adapts best when the pressure comes on.

“One thing that has really impressed me about this Leinster side is their ability to adapt during games. Whether it’s after 20 minutes, at half-time or in the closing stages, they’ve shown they can change their approach and find solutions. That’s a hugely valuable asset in a final.”

Indeed it will be a tragedy, a tragedy for Munster, Ulster and Connacht who are deprived of their budget to fund the Leinster squad size, academy and their marquee imports.
