Ollie Sapsford: Brumbies lock in ‘incredibly valuable’ back on new deal

New Zealand-born Australia A representative Ollie Sapsford has re-signed with the ACT Brumbies for two years, with an option for a third, which will see the utility back remain in the nation’s capital through to the end of 2029.

Sapsford represented the All Blacks Sevens and impressed for Hawke’s Bay in New Zealand’s NPC before making the move across the Tasman, signing with the Brumbies ahead of the 2022 Super Rugby season.

The New Zealander debuted for the Brums as an impact player off the bench in the opening round of that season, and has since become an invaluable member of the squad, covering both the centres and outside backs in 58 games to date.

Coach Stephen Larkham has named Sapsford in the run-on side four times this season, lining up on the wing against the Western Force, Crusaders, Blues and NSW Waratahs. Sapsford scored a try against the Force to open the campaign, with the Brumbies currently third on the ladder.

“I’m really happy to be staying on with the Brumbies. It’s a great club with a strong culture, and I’ve loved being part of it,” Sapsford said in a statement.

“For me, it’s about turning up each week, driving standards and ultimately doing whatever it takes to win the comp.

“The boys and everyone around the club have made Canberra feel like home, so I’m looking forward to what’s ahead.”

Sapsford earned representative honours with Australia A for the first time in a 27-21 defeat to Tonga on July 14, 2023. Future Wallabies captain Harry Wilson and Queensland Reds centre Josh Flook were among those also named to come off the bench that day.

After making 16 appearances in the next Super Rugby Pacific season, Sapsford was again selected for higher honours with Australia A against an England XV. Henry Pollock and Fraser Dingwall both suited up for the England side at the Twickenham Stoop on November 18, 2024.

Sapsford wore an Australia A jersey for the third time against a Japan XV last October, starting on one wing in the 71-7 victory. As a leader and a reliable backline option for the Brums, Sapsford remains in the representative frame.

“Ollie’s been outstanding for us. He’s really grown into a leader within the group, so it’s great to have him staying on,” Brumbies coach Stephen Larkham explained.

“He’s moved around a bit in the backline, but no matter where he’s played, he’s delivered. That kind of versatility is incredibly valuable across a long season.”

Brumbies Director of Performance Cameron Treloar added: “Ollie’s developed into a key leader within our program, and that’s something we place a lot of value on. We’re building a squad around players who drive standards and set the example for those coming through.

“Securing him is a big result for us. His experience and influence, both on and off the field, are critical as we continue to push this group forward.”
