Brazil have appointed former men’s international Guilherme Coghetto as the new head coach of its women’s national team.

As Yaras have been without a head coach since Emiliano Caffera’s departure from the role after Women’s Rugby World Cup 2025. Brazil left the tournament at the group stage after losses to France, South Africa and Italy.

Coghetto was a player with Brazil’s men’s national team between 2013 and 2023, but has been coaching regularly for several years. He is no stranger to As Yaras after coaching their backs at last year’s Women’s Rugby World Cup. He has also been an assistant the women’s rugby sevens team in HSBC SVNS competitions and assisted the Cobras in Super Rugby Americas.

The 34-year-old has already taken charge of his new team and has set the goal of Women’s Rugby World Cup 2029 qualification.

Brazil’s first Test under the guidance of Coghetto will come at the end of May against Colombia. It has also been confirmed that As Yaras will compete at the WXV Global Series Challenger in Hong Kong this September, where they will go toe-to-toe with Fiji, Hong Kong China, the Netherlands, Samoa and Spain across three weekends.

Upon his appointment Coghetto said: “The expectation of the work is to carry out the four-year cycle well until the next World Cup, in 2029. In 2026, the focus is on building the team’s style of play and culture, so that we arrive in the best possible way in 2027.

“After that, the proposal is to ensure continuity for the group that was part of the work for the 2025 World Cup, while we continue to identify young talents for the Yaras. The staff is excited and the group of athletes is too.

“The first camp has already taken place and was super positive. Against Colombia, we will test new athletes and we know that it is essential to work with patience, because implementing a new way of playing takes time.”
