Jamie Joseph says the words New Zealand fans feared most after Tangitau injury

The Highlanders will await an official diagnosis of the extent of the injury that ended Caleb Tangitau’s evening against the Chiefs, but head coach Jamie Joseph says it appears to be a ruptured Achilles.

The winger has enjoyed some of the finest form in Super Rugby in 2026, with higher honours widely expected to be on the table under new All Blacks coach Dave Rennie.

But his season may have come to a cruel and abrupt end while the Highlanders were playing beyond the full-time siren in search of another try, despite a draw or win or win being out of reach.

The non-contact injury happened on Tangitau’s 14th carry of the game, and the 23-year-old’s reaction made it clear that he was expecting to face a significant period of time on the sidelines. Joseph affirmed that notion after the final whistle.

“I just found out it looks as though he’s ruptured his Achilles,” the coach said to begin his postgame press conference.

“That’s really disappointing for him as a young player, a young winger coming in, playing really good rugby and scoring awesome tries. Really disappointed for him.

“He’s young, that’s on his side, and the surgeons these days are pretty good. He’ll be back.”

The Chiefs collected the ball that Tangitau spilled when he collapsed in pain, and launched an attack that resulted in a try two minutes later.

The loss itself puts the Highlanders in a precarious position heading into their final game of the season. The team remain seventh on the table, one spot outside the playoff picture and in desperate need of all teams immediately above and below them to suffer nothing but losses over the final two weeks of the round-robin.

Joseph accepted the mathematical improbability of a playoff berth, responding “I think so” when asked if next week’s visit to Wellington would be his side’s final game of the year. The team have drawn the short straw with a bye in round 16, and the coach said the round 12 loss to the Drua in Fiji was the big one his team needed.

As for the Chiefs loss, Joseph’s charges were in the game at seven points apiece until a 28th-minute yellow card to Tomas Lavanini saw them drop to a 21-7 deficit by halftime, and from there, Joseph says his team fell into the usual problems that come with chasing the game.

“I think my short assessment is that we started well, and that’s important against a quality team like the Chiefs. They put us straight under the pump, really attacking us, and we defended that well,” Joseph reflected.

“It’s all about pressure. It was then our turn to throw a punch and we missed the goal. Those three points are important against the better teams in my mind. It’s best to stay as close as possible to maintain the confidence levels, and so you don’t have to chase the game.

“Then there were a couple of tries that were left begging, held up over the line. And again, it’s the same kind of thing; when you’re playing the top teams in the competition, you’ve got to make sure you can turn that pressure into points, and we didn’t.

“Then you find yourself chasing, and when you chase, you start overplaying. That’s always the conundrum when you take teams on; if they defend you well and you end up overplaying, you end up beating yourself at times.”

The game was closer than the score. Too much reliance on TT and Tangitau by Highlanders. But they showed some sting in the forwards. Chiefs just too good across the park.
