Ex-NRL and Waratahs flyer explains decision to join the ACT Brumbies

Triston Reilly played a few NRL games for the Wests Tigers, represented the Australia Men’s Sevens side and spent multiple seasons with the NSW Waratahs, but a conversation with Stephen Larkham convinced the winger to move to Australia’s capital.
The ACT Brumbies announced on July 15 that Reilly has inked a two-year deal. Reilly played 40 matches for the Waratahs but will now wear a different club’s colours in Super Rugby Pacific next year, but will first suit up for the Brums in Super Rugby AUS.
Reilly is coming off another strong Super Rugby season with the Tahs, having made a handful of starts at either wing or in the centres. The utility back played in 12 matches overall, which included try-scoring efforts against the Hurricanes and Moana Pasifika.

The 27-year-old, who scored a try for the First Nations & Pasifika XV against the British & Irish Lions almost 14 months ago in Melbourne, has spent multiple weeks with the Brums now ahead of the second edition of Super Rugby AUS.
“I first met with Bernie, Stephen Larkham, and just the way he spoke about the club. Obviously heard a lot about the club already but the way he talked about the way the boys play, the attacking rugby, I felt like that was going to take my game to the next level,” Reilly said this week.
“It really intrigued me… I really look forward to that.
“I’d like to say I bring physicality in defnece and then attacking, just being a bit of a smart player. Attack-wise, just being able to pop up where there’s opportunities on the field,” he added.
“I just want to be able to play within the team and play each week and contribute to the team winning and I’m really looking forward to that.”
The Brumbies have a home match first up in Super Rugby AUS, taking on Reilly’s former side the Waratahs in Bungendore on September 13. They will then face the Western Force away, before rounding out the regular season against the Queensland Reds at Viking Park.
Reilly is looking forward to the competition that begins in just a matter of weeks, ready to get stuck into some games. The outside back’s partner lives in Canberra, so making the move down south proved to be “quite easy.”
“I really enjoyed my time at the Waratahs. I think I spent five or six seasons there, really enjoyed my time there,” Reilly explained.
“For me, just with where I am with life at the moment, just a change, a bit of a different environment. I’m happy with where I’m at, at the moment.
“I’m looking forward to the next two seasons here at the Brumbies.”
