Matfield explains what Boks had that Leinster lack in Nienaber system

Former South Africa captain Victor Matfield has pinpointed why Jacques Nienaber’s defensive system has not been as successful with Leinster as it was with South Africa.

The Springboks won back-to-back World Cups under Nienaber’s aegis in 2019 and 2023, with his high-octane blitz defence perhaps being the defining feature of the world champions’ game plan.

Since his move to Leinster in 2024, he has been unable to transpose that defensive system on the Irish province, with Bordeaux-Begles picking the system apart at times as they triumphed 41-19 in the Investec Champions Cup final on Saturday.

Of course, Leinster have still tasted success during Nienaber’s stint, winning the United Rugby Championship last season and reaching two Champions Cup finals, but their defence has not been the weapon that it was for South Africa.

Matfield believes he knows why, and explained on his Rugby Rivals podcast that Leinster lack the physicality South Africa possess.

“Whenever Leinster fall behind, it’s because of Jacques. You can just hear it’s the defensive system,” he said, highlighting the attention Nienaber receives every time Leinster lose a match.

“I was in the studio on Saturday and we were talking about why it, and why that defensive system from outside in, shutting down, no more than two passes, only works for South Africa, but Leinster are not really getting there.

“We really believe it’s just that physicality. With a Springbok team, every time they make a tackle, they kill the ball right there. It’s slow ball and they can get into space again.

“Unfortunately with Leinster, although they’re there for the first few phases, they don’t slow the ball down. So it’s quick ball, one cleanout at the ruck and Bordeaux had people on their feet.

“If you want to defend like that, you need the physicality as well.”

It’s the requirement for incompetence by the refs that makes it work for the Boks. The only way they can win thee days.

naaigie! What’s wrong, my lad? Your bile seems to have lost its bite and your drivel, well tbh, it seems more like pablum. Action a bit slow on the taxi’s backseat?

But at least your hallucinations are clearly still strong!

Definitely not an unbeatable formula as shown on the High Veldt last year.

Yup

To be fair, England also showed a lack of physical commitment to the rush defence during this years 6 Nations.

It’s not for everyone.

This makes sense. It also magnifies the flaw in thinking that speed of play is a sufficient condition to beat the Boks. In reality brutal power and speed, both in attack and defence are necessary conditions to beat the modern Boks. What UBB showed is that if you have both, then the Bok defensive system is beatable - well in theory at least.

Phase of play in the first half where Leinster are “hammering” away at Bordeauxs line and getting shunted backwards at every carry. Sums up the difference in appetite and attitude between the two sides. Bordeaux’s rush defence was Nienabers by design but implemented to perfection. Leinsters players aren’t up to scratch when the game gets close to test match levels, same as the Irish national side.

Double the excuses.

Its nice that Nienaber is defended. He isn’t the only one defending. It makes sense why his system worked with the Boks. And then also because every time we lost a game, we knew he could pull something out of his hat and it worked and he did. He knew he had the full support of the entire Springbok national behind him.

However, in Ireland, he always feels like he cant get the critics off his back. And of course if the supporters are not behind him, it is only a matter of time before the team throws him under the bus.

My solution, come back to the Springboks, he will always ALWAYS be welcome
