England hooker Theo Dan has signed a new deal at Saracens, becoming the fourth hooker to put pen to paper at the club this season.

Dan’s club and country team-mate Jamie George got the ball rolling with a new deal in January, which will run until next season when he plans to retire after the 2027 World Cup.

James Hadfield and Eoghan Clarke followed George a month later in committing to the club in a double deal, and now Dan has made it a quartet of hookers that the London outfit have retained.

Fellow England internationals Elliot Daly and Ben Earl have also signed new deals with the club, who crashed out of the Investec Champions Cup in the round of 16 at the hands of Bath in their last outing.

Dan will hope for a strong end to the season with Saracens, who sit in sixth place in the Gallagher PREM, with the incentive of adding to his 20 England caps at the end of the season.

Despite being part of Steve Borthwick’s England squad for the Guinness Six Nations, the 25-year-old did not feature in the Championship, as the No.2 jersey was shared between George and Luke Cowan-Dickie.

However, the Sale Sharks hooker faces a race to make England’s Nations Championship fixtures in July after recently undergoing an operation for a broken wrist. Should he fail to return in time to play for England, Dan could be the next cab off the rank ahead of fixtures against South Africa, Fiji and Argentina.

For now, Dan will be focussed on helping Saracens make the PREM play-offs, where they need to close a 12-point gap with fourth-place Exeter Chiefs in the final six matches of the season. Sarries travel to Sandy Park to take on the Chiefs in the final match of the regular season, which could have a lot riding on it.

If he can improve his throwing then he could be England’s starting hooker.
