New Zealand Rugby have failed to land the signature of one of their premier superstars, Mark Tele’a. The 28-year-old has confirmed this morning he will be taking his talents to Japan.

The winger has been a central figure for the All Blacks since a breakout 2023 campaign in which he starred at the Rugby World Cup, helping his side reach the final just one year after his international debut.

One of the most uniquely evasive runners the game has seen, Tele’a departs New Zealand with a Super Rugby Pacific title and World Cup silver medal in hand.

“It‘s been an amazing ride so many fantastic memories and amazing people … But after much thought I have decided from next year I will play my rugby in Japan,” Tele’a shared on his Instagram.

“Thanks to fellow players, coaches, administrators and fans! for making the past years so special for me. always been grateful and blessed for the journey 🙏🏾 But on to the next chapter for myself much love 💙.

The post didn’t confirm which club Tele’a has signed with, but reports from 1News last week suggested Tele’a was eyeing a reunion with former All Blacks bosses Ian Foster and Sir Steven Hansen at Toyota Verblitz.

The move will represent a significant change for the Aucklander, who joins a bevy of Kiwi talent in a culture and rugby experience proving incredibly popular among players.

Should it be Hansen’s club who have secured Tele’as services, the winger would serve as a replacement for the departing Joseph Manu, the former NRL superstar transitioning into the 15-man game with an eye on a black jersey. Manu is reportedly seeking a release from a French contract in the 2025/26 season, supposedly with offers in New Zealand and Australia on the table.

the Verblitz club also currently boast names like Richie Gray, Michael Hooper, Aaron Smith and Pieter-Steph du Toit.

Tele’a, a 19-Test All Black, has scored 13 tries in the black jersey and, after some shaky form early in the 2024 international season, returned to his game-breaking best on the Northern Tour.

While Tele’a and the Blues have endured a poor start to their 2025 Super Rugby Pacific campaign, the reigning champions are turning their season around and are now well within reach of a playoff berth.

Tele’a’s departure opens the door for one of the many young outside backs reaching high gear in 2025; Emoni Narawa, Caleb Tangitau, Leroy Carter, Chay Fihaki and Kini Naholo will all be in the running for the spot Tele’a’s absence creates.

That’s a real shame. I think Tele’a was a winger who without needing to rely on speed or a lethal step - that can taken away from you at any time by injury - could have gone on to be one of the best wingers in the world at the next rugby world cup. He was simply unique and it’s a shame he’s not sharing that with the world now.

Tele’a reminds me of James Lowe in a sense. Not that they would be a 1:1 comparison in terms of skillset (Tele’a doesn’t have Lowe’s boot), but exactly in what you wrote about: he’s not great at what typically makes wingers great, but still manages to be efficient and lethal. That’s a special player. Also, top speed/acceleration is the merciless cap on a winger’s longevity. Tele’a doesn’t have that problem, as he doesn’t over-rely on speed.

Mark Telea is a big loss. But we do have a lot of talent on the wing. Chay Fihaki at the Crusaders has showed why he was called up to the AB’s last year. Especially in the last 2 games , sensational stuff.

Mate please do yourself a favor and realize there are more players suited than just Crusader players like Highlanders Caleb Tangitau who has also been an All Black albeit 7's and he is playing phenomenally and current All Black Emoni Narawa who is also sensational.

And yes i’m a Crusader supporter.

Ill be glad to see a forced change on the ABs. Telea is very good at some things but lacks in defensive positioning and tackling plus struggles under the high ball at times.

Late Makazole Mapimpi try earns the Sharks win away to Edinburgh

Jake White described this as the strongest Sharks lineup ever. There is no doubt that it is at least an impressive roster. They did win, which is obviously an achievement against a good Edinburgh side. However …

For much of the first half Edinburgh seemed easily able to create 2 on 1 opportunities on both wings, with the defensive wingers biting in on the inside runner and cover defence being AWOL. Conversely the Sharks showed little ability to get behind the Edinburgh defensive line, with the sole exception of a nicely-exploited Am mismatch against a second row (which led to the Fassi try).

In general the Sharks, with their full complement of Bok firepower, do not look that dangerous in attack, and while tackling was good on the whole and goal line defence was impressive at times, they were exhibiting surprising breakdowns in open play defensive structures.

Also, the Sharks continue to be inaccurate, with material impact on the scoreboard. Missing two very kickable penalties is not the way to be the best. It looked to me like the Sharks contestable kicks were not well enough executed, and were too hard to recover.

Not sure what the running attack was trying to do, but my guess is that they were trying to pull off a Harlequins-style bash-and-offload game off of 12 (Esterhuizen). That’s not a terrible idea with the personnel available, but it would require creativity and a precision on second phase that was not in evidence.

Lastly, you have to have better discipline. It’s great that the team can cope with a 13 vs 14 period (of almost 10 minutes), but smart teams a avoid cards.

Having said that it was great to see the win. I thought that Edinburgh were cynical and niggly. Always hanging around on the wrong side of the breakdown, lots of intentional obstruction, illegal dummying at the base of the ruck, etc. They played a dirty game and the ref tolerated it. Always good to see that not succeed.

Overall the “best Sharks lineup ever” scraped the win, but under-performed their Bok-laden potential. Again.

Back in January, I got caught up in a cryptocurrency scam that really turned my life upside down. I invested a jaw-dropping $214,000 in BNB on what I thought was a legitimate crypto site. For a while, everything seemed to be going smoothly, and I was excited about the returns I was expecting. But then, when I tried to withdraw my profits, everything fell apart. The scammers froze my account and demanded more money, claiming I had breached some sort of agreement. I was completely devastated and felt trapped in a nightmare. It got so overwhelming that I started having dark thoughts about ending it all. Thankfully, my family noticed I was struggling and stepped in when I finally opened up about what was happening. During one of our talks, my niece mentioned a group called (Trust Geeks Hack Expert). She had heard they helped people recover their stolen cryptocurrencies, and I was intrigued. I thought, “Could this be my saving grace?” So, I decided to reach out to them and explain my situation in detail. To my surprise, (Trust Geeks Hack Expert) was incredibly responsive and compassionate. They reassured me that they had dealt with cases like mine before and would do everything they could to help. I was a bit skeptical, but I was also desperate for a solution. Amazingly, within about three days if I remember correctly they managed to recover the entire $214,000 that I had lost! I was in shock. It felt like a huge burden had been lifted off my shoulders. If you’re reading this and you’ve fallen victim to a crypto scam, I can’t recommend (Trust Geeks Hack Expert) enough. They are truly exceptional at what they do. Reach out for help, and don’t hesitate to contact them. (Trust Geeks Hack Expert)
