Mark Tele'a walks: All Black confirms departure from New Zealand

New Zealand Rugby have failed to land the signature of one of their premier superstars, Mark Tele’a. The 28-year-old has confirmed this morning he will be taking his talents to Japan.

The winger has been a central figure for the All Blacks since a breakout 2023 campaign in which he starred at the Rugby World Cup, helping his side reach the final just one year after his international debut.

One of the most uniquely evasive runners the game has seen, Tele’a departs New Zealand with a Super Rugby Pacific title and World Cup silver medal in hand.

“It‘s been an amazing ride so many fantastic memories and amazing people … But after much thought I have decided from next year I will play my rugby in Japan,” Tele’a shared on his Instagram.

“Thanks to fellow players, coaches, administrators and fans! for making the past years so special for me. always been grateful and blessed for the journey 🙏🏾 But on to the next chapter for myself much love 💙.

The post didn’t confirm which club Tele’a has signed with, but reports from 1News last week suggested Tele’a was eyeing a reunion with former All Blacks bosses Ian Foster and Sir Steven Hansen at Toyota Verblitz.

The move will represent a significant change for the Aucklander, who joins a bevy of Kiwi talent in a culture and rugby experience proving incredibly popular among players.

Should it be Hansen’s club who have secured Tele’as services, the winger would serve as a replacement for the departing Joseph Manu, the former NRL superstar transitioning into the 15-man game with an eye on a black jersey. Manu is reportedly seeking a release from a French contract in the 2025/26 season, supposedly with offers in New Zealand and Australia on the table.

the Verblitz club also currently boast names like Richie Gray, Michael Hooper, Aaron Smith and Pieter-Steph du Toit.

Tele’a, a 19-Test All Black, has scored 13 tries in the black jersey and, after some shaky form early in the 2024 international season, returned to his game-breaking best on the Northern Tour.

While Tele’a and the Blues have endured a poor start to their 2025 Super Rugby Pacific campaign, the reigning champions are turning their season around and are now well within reach of a playoff berth.

Tele’a’s departure opens the door for one of the many young outside backs reaching high gear in 2025; Emoni Narawa, Caleb Tangitau, Leroy Carter, Chay Fihaki and Kini Naholo will all be in the running for the spot Tele’a’s absence creates.
