Rassie Erasmus has named 10 uncapped players for South Africa’s latest alignment camp, including U20 captain Riley Norton.

The 40-man squad will assemble in Cape Town from Tuesday to Thursday next week, and will include 25 forwards and 15 backs.

Fresh from leading South Africa to U20 Rugby Championship glory, Stormers lock Norton has been included, as has his U20 team-mate Zekhethelo Siyaya, who did not feature in the Championship. Norton’s team-mates when South Africa won the World Rugby U20 Championship last year, Lions scrum-half Haashim Pead and back-row Bathobele Hlekani, and Sharks wing Jaco Williams, have also been included.

Following a standout season for the Stormers, flanker Paul de Villiers has been called up by Erasmus to a squad missing several frontline stars. Francke Horn, Sibabalwe Mahashe, Emmanuel Tshituka and Henco Van Wyk complete the ensemble of uncapped players.

The squad will be gearing up towards their first Test of the year against England in Johannesburg on July 4. First, the Boks will face the Barbarians in Gqeberha on June 20.

“This is an exciting group of players, and it’s been pleasing to see them make their presence felt in the Vodacom United Rugby Championship and during their teams’ Investec Champions Cup and EPCR Challenge Cup campaigns this season,” said Erasmus.

“This camp will be a good opportunity to expose those invited to our setup and the standards expected of the national coaches.

“We’re looking forward to involving Sibabalwe, Zekhethelo, Andre, Embrose, Francke, and Henco at this camp as we continue to build our squad depth.

“There are several players who are not currently fit to play, and we look forward to seeing them back in action in the near future, knowing they have a good sense of how the team operates and what will be expected of them when they return.

“It’s important to be clear about the objective of this alignment camp, and that is to expose these players to our environment, our standards, and the way we operate.

“The players who will not be present, whether through injury or workload, remain in our plans, and each one of them is on his own path with his own set of timelines.

“This week will give us the chance to align those who are fit and firing now with the way we want to operate, so that when an opportunity arises either this year or further down the line, they are ready to step up and deliver at international level.”

Still no place for Juanro"trokkie"Augustus?

Adding the Bos currently playing abroad, Rassie’s squad size may swell to 50 plus not counting the injured players?

Might be a case of too many to “digest”

P
PB 34 days ago

Hardly! The way the coaching team collect and analyse data, the size is irrelevant.

I reckon Riley Norton is a future Bok captain.

Certainly speaks well, would love to see him make that step up with the big boys.

NoLongerARuck 34 days ago

Still remains to be seen whether or not he can hack it at domestic level. For captain going forward after Kolisi its anybodies guess what will happen. May just be SFM

The squad will be gearing up towards their first Test of the year against England in Johannesburg on July 4.

No, this is a future looking squad.

Has he included any overseas players? Always thought it would be funny to take players out of club rugby for these camps and watch the clubs cry.

Get with the program. Ever heard of technology like Zoom. The overseas players join a virtual alignment camp. The camps are much about sharing strategy as expectations etc, than physical prep. Most of the overseas players are seasoned Boks, so know the expectations and standards.

The super “summer” camps are smart. Bringing together the old and young players from around the world. But I suppose the one advantage of NZs stay at home policy is all the talent is locked into the SR. So for 16 or so weeks all the young and old talent go head to head. We get to see all our younger guys perform against the vets in the multiple local derby games. Mini All Black trials for 3 months. And I think this has been one of the best SR seasons for that.

J
JW 34 days ago

Yeah not normally as stark was it was pre and post covid, where it was only trials (derbies) and the other teams were basically a rest week. This year they have been tested by the aussies even more and it’s requiring a lot more consistency out of them. But year, thats good in another way too (I don’t think the debries are as brutal as we result).

I liked the way Rassie does things, it’s got a proper framework around bring these guys in, were as the ABs just quitely ask players to join the team for a week or two as they go through the country. Theres no where near as much recognition for the same type of player selected here, and probably not as good an experience for the ABs selections either.

This is a hot take so please take this with a grain of salt or tell me if you agree

Without rassie the boks wouldn’t be as good as they are I think they would be about Irelands level right now decent but not the business the talent is undeniable however the development of these players isn’t great and rassie is doing a lot keep this level . Rassie made Munster look good so if he can do that no wonder spring boks are world beaters

Without rassie I doubt this squad would be in the conversation with the 2015 all blacks

W
Wayneo 34 days ago

If SA Rugby had reapointed Jake White post 2007 then the 2015 All Blacks would never have been as dominant, they would have been talking about the the Jake White era instead.

P
PB 34 days ago

Rassie is a genius no doubt! If we had this conversation in 2021 I would agree.

Currently we have great coaches in Franco Smith and van Graan who can continue the work started by Rassie. The value of Rassie is in the structure he has implemented to identify talent from schools level and finding ways to keep them in the pathways and monitoring their progress. They have Duanne Vermeulen as mobi unit on the road attending clinics at clubs and schools.

H
Hammer Head 34 days ago

Would the 2015 ABs have been in the conversation with the 2015 ABs without the influence of Henry/Hansen?

I doubt it.

J
JW 34 days ago

Depends what you mean by without Rassie. Sure if he gets in the road of a Bok scrum at training and thats the end of him, it might fall apart, but if you’re planning for the worst, he’s always going to be there in some sort of advisory role at least, and I’d think that would be enough.

I can’t see him taking up a full time gig elsewhere that takes him completely out of the game in SA, unless he gets something big like the job to lead the All Blacks.

W
Wayneo 35 days ago

While the rest of the rugby world are still scratching their heads over basic mathematics, traditional 5-3 bench splits and frantically trying to copy his old homework, Rassie Erasmus is casually operating in 4D chess mode, using his alignment camps to seamlessly integrate the next generation of Super Soldier forwards, highveld warlords and absolute specimens of human destruction to ensure South Africa’s assembly line never runs out of physical monsters to field against fatigued little caucasian guys from Europe or wherever

J
JW 34 days ago

I think he could sit back with his popcorn and feet up and they would still come through.

SAs latest batch of young players has come at just the right time.

For years Rassie has brought through fewer young players than any other international coach, and watched his squad get older and older. Now he is finally in a position to phase in a new generation that could rival the current vintage for talent.

W
Wayneo 35 days ago

What a load of nonsense, you obviously have no clue how many players he caped or the age profile of any of the players if you think his squad is old.

2018 (22 Debutants)

2019 (2 Debutants)

2021 (9 Debutants)

2022 (7 Debutants)

2023 (2 Debutants)

2024 (7 Debutants)

2025 (7 Debutants)

If you bothered to take a closer look you would have noticed that since Rassie came in 31 older players have been rotated out or retired and replaced by younger players

L
LondonAllBlack 35 days ago

Rennie also needs to fast-track some of the youth from the U20s. Bring them into the squad so they can learn the system and get used to the environment. Otherwise, we will lose the opportunity to develop depth. He said himself that we are only one or two injuries away from a crisis in certain positions.

P
PB 34 days ago

If you review the u20 Rugby Championship, which of the players in the team do you feel is ready to be drafted in, even just to get a feel of the AB setup, like Rassie does. They had an up and down tournament. They upped ante in their last match, but even then the u20 Boks had a good lead and had already secured the title by half time. Not saying they took the foot off, but it is possible.

J
JW 34 days ago

Personaly I think they should have a Junior ABs team, your under 23’s with maybe a few recent ABs 25/26 etc.

W
Wayneo 35 days ago

I fully agree, AB’s need to get rid of the grandfathers like Beauden Barrett, Richie Mo’unga, Shannon Frizell and Brodie Retallick etc.

Nothing like throwing fresh 20 year old’s into the Ellis Park meat grinder

TokoRFC 35 days ago

Such and organised system, Rassie may be a bit of a trouble maker at times but at the end of the day he is very astute in his planning and processes. Not to mention communication

P
PB 34 days ago

To be fair, he has reformed and now takes a much more measured approach yo sorting out issues he is unhappy with.

In his defence WR contributed to Rassiegate, with their inept handling of coaches requests for clarity, and let us not forget where the leak of the video originated! In Australia, with an Australian official at the centre of it.

S
SB 35 days ago

No Willie le Roux.

W
Wayneo 35 days ago

Rassie is now tracking a Springbok pool of 70+ players

Hard to fathom but it went from 43 to 70 in the space of just a few years

Considering how our system is developing talented youngsters now days, this group will probably get even bigger next season

M
MM 34 days ago

Bigger is not necessarily better. You only need 30 odd……..

S
SB 35 days ago

I’m sure he’s tracking more. Galthie mentioned they follow 100 players for France overall for example.
