Canterbury grind past Otago to regain Ranfurly Shield for 18th time

Canterbury have claimed the Ranfurly Shield for the 18th time, overcoming Otago, 19-15, at Forysth Barr Stadium in Dunedin.

The Sunday afternoon Hilux NPC clash was a close encounter, with both teams trading blows throughout the game that had everything, including yellow cards, golden-oldie scrums, and lead changes.

Alex Robertson’s side were the last side to hold the Log o’ Wood before Otago, and have taken their 2026 Hilux NPC campaign to two wins from two games after beating Auckland in round one.

All Blacks first-five Richie Mo’unga was a steady hand for the away side on Sunday afternoon, while Jamie Hannah and Brodie McAlister proved a handful for Otago’s defence.

Hannah, who made his All Blacks debut at One New Zealand Stadium against France back in July, has now scored in two straight weeks, scoring on the stroke of halftime in Dunedin.

Otago’s Lucas Casey had another standout performance in the same fixture he made a name for himself in back in 2025.

Canterbury threatened with ball in hand in the first couple of minutes of the contest, but Lucas Casey had other ideas, stealing a turnover in midfield.

Otago winger Jona Nareki had the first chance of the Ranfurly Shield contest in the ninth minute, chipping and chasing the ball towards the left-hand corner. Nareki contested Johnny McNicholl in the air, with referee Ben O’Keefe ruling a knock-on from the Otago winger.

A Louis Chapman box-kick started a period of dominance for Robertson’s side, with Jone Rova and co winning a breakdown counter-ruck penalty.

Mo’unga found touch deep inside Otago’s 22, setting up a driving-maul opportunity. Brodie McAlister launched it to the back, before joining the maul and pushing the drive towards the line.

The Canterbury driving-maul was too powerful, as McAlister dotted down for the contest’s first score of the afternoon. Mo’unga added the extras, extending the lead to 7-0 after 15 minutes.

McAlister was then pinged for playing the halfback, as new Blues recruit Cameron Millar slotted the resulting penalty over the posts.

Brown’s Otago were gifted three points in front of the posts just one minute before halftime, but Christian Lio-Willie opted for the lineout, where the throw was inaccurate.

That decision would come back to bite them, with the away side then going the length of the field to dot down three minutes after the halftime hooter. Mo’unga placed the ball deep inside Otago’s half once again, with McAlister ready to set the driving maul.

Canterbury eventually peeled off, providing Jamie Hannah the prime opportunity to score his second try of the season in the left-hand corner. Mo’unga failed to add the conversion from the sideline.

The home side burst out of the blocks at Forsyth Barr Stadium after halftime, but couldn’t quite break through Canterbury’s battle-hardened defence.

Otago were camped deep inside Canterbury’s 22-meter line for just under ten minutes, before the away side’s repeated infringements caused Manumaua Letiu to go to the bin.

With Letiu in the bin, McAlister off the field for an HIA, and Canterbury down to 13 men, the game was forced to continue with golden-oldie scrums, which Otago capitalised on.

Lio-Willie darted left, falling just short, before Casey barged his way over the line to get the Shield holders back in the contest. Millar, crucially, missed the conversion from close, hitting the upright as the game remained a one-try margin.

Replacement Otago prop Ben Lopas closed the two-score gap in the 74th minute, brushing past two last-ditch Canterbury tacklers to place the ball down under the posts. Millar converted, taking the score to 19-5 with less than ten minutes to play.

Despite Otago’s game-on-the-line efforts, Canterbury held on to reclaim the Ranfurly Shield for the 18th time.
