Leicester coach Alex Davies leaves club with immediate effect for Test role
Wales have appointed Leicester Tigers assistant coach Alex Davies as a full-time kicking specialist in Steve Tandy’s backroom team, with the former Bath fly-half set to take up the role on September 1.
Davies will work closely with attack coach Matt Sherratt and will be tasked with leading the development of the senior men’s kicking philosophy. His remit will extend beyond Test windows, with the 40-year-old also working with players throughout the year and contributing to the wider Welsh Rugby DNA across the pathway.
The former Bath, Yorkshire Carnegie and London Welsh player moved into coaching after bringing his 16-year playing career to an end in 2020. He subsequently spent time with Wasps, while also working with the Red Roses, the Netherlands national team and Rosslyn Park.
Davies, who worked wonders alongside Tigers fly-half Billy Searle last season, has spent the past three years at Mattioli Woods Welford Road, initially combining his work with Tigers on a part-time basis before moving into a permanent role on Geoff Parling’s staff. His departure now creates another vacancy in Leicester’s coaching set-up ahead of the new season.
His arrival strengthens Tandy’s coaching team ahead of Wales’ three home Nations Championship fixtures in November, while Leicester have already begun the process of filling the vacancy. The Gallagher PREM club confirmed that Davies’ replacement will be announced next week.
Tandy said: “It’s great to have Alex join the coaching team. He’s a very talented coach who will be another asset for us as a group. I can’t wait for him to join us and to help continue shaping our identity as we head into the next phase of the Nations Championship with our three home games this November.”
Davies added: “I’m incredibly proud to be joining Wales as kicking coach, working under Steve Tandy and alongside an outstanding coaching team.
“It’s a huge honour to represent Welsh rugby and an opportunity I’m extremely grateful for. There’s an exciting journey ahead for Welsh rugby and I can’t wait to get started and be a part of it.”
WRU Director of Rugby and Elite Performance Dave Reddin said: “We’re delighted to add Alex to the full-time Wales coaching team. He impressed in a highly competitive interview process and I know he will add real value both to Steve’s coaching team as well as the wider the Welsh Rugby DNA.”
Tigers head coach Parling said: “We thank Al for his contribution to the club. He coaches with real enthusiasm and drive to improve and we wish him all the best as he moves on.”
