Finger of blame quickly pointed after Leinster's Champions Cup beatdown

It’s a bitter, bitter blow for Leinster rugby. The four-time winners were battered into submission by a Bordeaux side, walking off the field at the San Mamés on the receiving end of a galling 41-19 rout.

In truth, it was a scoreline that arguably flattered the Irish province. Leinster scored first through Tommy O’Brien but it’s largely one-way traffic after that, the game over as a contest by halftime.

It’s a defeat that will go down as one of the most painful in Leinster’s illustrious history, not least given it’s one-sided nature. It’s now four Champions Cup final losses in just five seasons.

Online, Leinster fans were looking to point the finger of blame. Question over the continuation of the current coaching ticket echoed across social media.

Popular South African account Scrumming flyhalf wrote: “Gonna take a huge coaching job to motivate the Leinster players to give it another go next year in the Champions Cup. Losing 4 finals in 5 years must be psychologically battering… Might need a brand new coaching staff to clean the slate.”

There was plenty of explicit criticism levelled at Leo Cullen and Jacques Nienaber, suggesting the current set-up isn’t working and it might time for change at the top in south Dublin.

One poster wrote: “Bordeaux-Bègles were outstanding. Agree with Andy Dunne on Off the Ball that Leinster aren’t learning from their mistakes. I disagree that there doesn’t need to be a change in personnel. Cullen’s race has been run for three seasons. The Nienaber project has failed.”

“The Nienaber experiment has been a farce,” wrote one irate X user. “Seems to be a bluffer. I’ve long thought that the Rassie/Nienaber stick has only workered because of the South African player resources. The guys produced nothing with Munster.”

“Leo Cullen needs to resign. Biggest budget in Europe. Keeps his mates on the coaching staff. Stacked to the high heavens with internationals,” wrote another. “Heads must roll.”

“It’s about time Leo Cullen moves on from Leinster. Gone stale – crying out for new ideas,” pitched in another.

Others picked up on that fact that Bordeaux’s attack – which decimated Leinster – was coached by Clare native Noel McNamara, having once been Dan Sheehan’s math teacher. McNamara was head coach of the Ireland U20s from 2018 to 2020 winning a Six Nations Grand Slam in 2019 before being lost to the Irish rugby system.

One prankster wryly pointed out before the game: “Important to remember that Noel McNamara couldn’t beat Doris or Keenan in the Leinster Senior Cup which really must be weighing on Bordeaux mentally”

Another sarcastic Tweet read under Leinster’s full time post: “Remember everyone, all is fine and dandy. Three more years for Nienaber, three more years for Cullen, three more years for the whole coaching ticket! It doesn’t matter if we are committing structural suicide, no accountability is allowed to happen whatsoever!”

All very interesting , the blame game comes to the fore as rugby inexorably trends to the less attractive side already prevalent in soccer. Whilst I am no great fan of Leo Cullen as a coach I imagine there will be many Irish fans from munster, ulster and contact who are quietly pleased the the Leinster takes all the talent first experience has failed. Having said that the coaches don’t miss the tackles, drop the ball, give away the penalties etc and must take some ownership for their latest fall at the final hurdle. Tge better side on the day clearly deserved to win and had the game not been over by half time UBB may have gone on to score many more points.

In any spirts environment it does the sport in general no good at all for all the best players to be in one club, sooner or later someone bigger and better comes along, in this case UBB

So suck it up Leinster, take ownership of your failings while at same time appreciating you achievements in getting to the final. Roll on next season with everything if brings. Let’s enjoy the sport for what it it.

Like clockwork. Nienaber at fault, nothing to do with the players who look like they were playing 20 percent slower than their French counterparts. The squad needs refreshing more like it. Nienaber needs his residency and then he will work with a Top 14 or SA franchise.

The difference between Leinster and South Africa regarding Nienaber’s defensive coaching is the degree of commitment in the tackle. Bordeaux were constantly tackling the ball carrier backwards whereas the French were gaining one or two meters past the contact point. The Irish were allowing the French to run onto them and then. wrapping in the old school type defence whereas the French were using the Nienaber style of aggressive rush which depends heavily on stopping the runner in his tracks. It’s difficult to get front foot ball when every tackle is taking the ball behind the gainline.

Are you saying Jacques has been assisting UBB? Wow, that would be something!

Serious problems at Irish rugby, could they become the new whipping boys like Wales were the past 3 years?

Like clockwork.

Everything that looked off from that Irish team came down to poor player execution. And everything that looked great about that French team, great execution.

Quite obvious, actually.

The Top 14 produces once again, and yet we act surprised/disappointed.

Sometimes one must just accept that you’re not good enough and acknowledge the victors who were a class above.

Back-2-back is no fluke.

The Neinaber defence system does not suit or support the Irish national system. As Leinster are tbe main contributor to the National Tezm I have always felt this is responsible for the Irish’s slow starts in thd 6 nations.

For thd Leinster/Irish tezms to progress its time for him (and those supporting this system) to go. A new game plan strategy is needed that supports both Provincial and National Teams to be successful..Look up and read the field rugby

I agree with you entirely. The Nieaber rush system depends on highly committed tackling where eighty percent of the tackles are dominant. This is bread and butter for the South Africans who grow up on being praised for dominant defence. Yesterday the French were dominant in the collision and in the carry - at least after the first 15 minutes. I am battling to think of any system in which the less dominant team will prevail.

If Nienaber’s methods only work on South African players, are the commentators finally admitting that Irish players just aren’t that good or able to learn? Leinster hired ONE member of Rassie’s staff, not the entire setup. Nienaber is not even making the ultimate decisions. The Irish club got the rub of the green throughout, and if one is going to wear their tragically thin mullet to cover their jersey, the risk of a hair pull should be on them. A yellow card was absurd.

of course, 99% of the blame has to go to Jacques Nienaber and the few non-Irish players in the team ….

on a more serious note: 2 years ago Leinster was on par with Toulouse in the final, this time there was a clear difference in class - that’s what I would be worried about …. but then again, same goes for Montpellier vs Ulster …. so maybe the issue is, the Top14 is getting better and better, whilst the other competitions are unable to catch up …..

Most of the blame is going to Cullen actually but it is a fair question if Cullen threw the attacking baby out with the bathwater by appointing Nienaber. Don’t talk that personally if you’re a Saffer but Leinster are allowed have their postmortem without unfair implications of xenophobia.

2 years ago, it was about the same players, they have 2 years more now, and the game plan is about the same.

Doris had more yards in reverse after being tackled than he had going forward. Both his and, especially, Gibson-Park’s constant moaning and griping to the referee were out of order. It wasn’t the referee’s fault that UBB were more committed, more skilled and played exciting rugby compared to the same old boring drudgery that Leinster have churned out for years.

They wonder why they keep losing finals yet they continue with the same brand of rugby over and over again.

"Insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results."

Nonsense. Previous finals were one score games. This was an exceptional UBB performance and that should be applauded. Unless you’re just here to snipe at Leinster.

S

The players are just not as good as the UBB players.

E

There isn’t as much in it as you think. UBB only failed to score on one 22 entry. On etop of that the two intercept type tries. It was a really excellent showing by them. Sometimes you must just applaud such a great team.

Perhaps but insisting on keeping this robotic coaching duo feels a bit strange…
