Codie Taylor: New All Blacks coaches 'want us to be a lot fitter'

Dave Rennie has sent the message, letting every player in the hunt for All Blacks selection know just how high his standards will be for their fitness levels.

It’s indicative of the game plan the new head coach is planning to implement, says team centurion Codie Taylor.

In his few public engagements since being announced in the role, Rennie has shared his desire to reinvigorate the All Blacks’ counter-attacking play, stressed work rate as a pillar of his selection criteria, and highlighted breakdown physicality as a must for his forwards.

Taylor is no stranger to elite conditioning demands. Having debuted for the All Blacks 11 years ago, the 35-year-old is one of just two All Blacks remaining from the squad that won the 2015 Rugby World Cup.

“I think it’s something you have to maintain over the season and build on,” Taylor told Millsy and Guy on Sport Nation, when asked how he trains to achieve peak fitness during the international season.

“It’s not something you can just do in preseason and expect it to stay the same. I’m a firm believer that you should put in a bit of hard work each week to get those fitness levels up.

“And by the sounds of it, what I’ve gathered from the small conversations I’ve had with the All Blacks coaches is that they want us to be a lot fitter. I assume that’s just the brand of rugby they want to play.

“So, I think we’re in pretty good shape. This back end of Super Rugby, you want to be as fresh as possible for the games, because they only get more and more intense each week you go.”

Rennie and company will have just 12 days between naming the first All Blacks squad of the year and playing the first Test of the year, not enough time to build fitness levels but certainly enough time to set a tone. Taylor says he’s anticipating “a bit of hard work” once the team comes together, but also an emphasis on rest after a demanding Super Rugby season.

“That calendar rolls around pretty quickly, so it’ll be an interesting one to balance out,” the veteran said, knowing there’ll be a lot of information to take on board with new strategists in place, too.

Now in his 13th season with the Crusaders, Taylor says he’s not getting comfortable and is continuing to grow his game. In 2026, he has decided his next step is to follow his Kiwi counterparts in the hooker position’s lead and work on his ball-carrying ability.

Fellow All Blacks Asafo Aumua of the Hurricanes and Samisoni Taukei’aho of the Chiefs are both renowned for their ball-carrying abilities, as were the All Blacks hookers when Taylor first came into the team: Kevin Mealamu and Dane Coles.

“There are always things you want to be working on, and things that you take pride in,” Taylor said.

“I see good opportunities; we’re always measured on set piece as hookers, so always driving that area of the game, making sure we’re doing our best there. And the way the game is now, it’s pretty dynamic, so getting ball in hand and growing that part of my game is something that I’ve been really trying to work on this year. You don’t always get those opportunities, but when you do, you want to make the most of them.”

Pleased to see this highlighted by the coaches, we’ve slipped back into the bunch in terms of fitness in recent years.

It’s been a problem at the end of matches and particularly when trying to back up one week to the next. SA blew us off the park in test two, with guys looking out on their feet. It was reported before the Twickenham test that the team was still worryingly fatigued on the Thursday before that big loss.

Squad rotation (or lack of) and poor use of the bench were also contributing factors - but fitness needs to improve accross the board if we have any chance of getting through that tough WC knock out draw.

Fitness is mind & body peaked at the right time. It is what you hear. This is a squad where all the moving parts have too click. The Rugby World is a brutal contest. NZ will always be near the top in with a chance. No team can dominate these days. I hope NZ have that healthy mind set. They can win.

fair enough maybe they want to use thebench players as replacements when needed

Lost to NZ in 2019. Lost to Ireland in 2023. Should have lost to France, England and NZ in 2023. 5th best team at ABSOLUTE MAXIMUM.

Bokkies forever the bridesmaids

Yet they didn't deal with it. If anything it the AB’s who the bridemids as the Springboks have won every final they have been in.

Imagine lucking your way to two world cups and thinking you're the greatest 🫵🤣🫵🤣

Imagine using every opportunity imaginable to vent about the springboks. Sad really.

Imagine still thinking you’re the same team as 20 years ago.

Bokkies lucked their way to 2019/2023 and think they are the benchmark 🤣🫵🤣🫵🤣🫵 not even in the top 4 best teams at each world cup.

You should come over here and meet some bokkies for realsies. You’ll eat your fist my boy.

I’ve been to New Zealand. The tourists are nice.

I truly sympathize with your frustration. It can’t be easy. But try deal with it more constructively. Spewing crap after sniffing paint isn’t healthy.

Bye bye bokkies 🫵🤣 once the All Blacks get back to their high octane, high skill, high fitness DNA; your big roided up booffers are gonna be gassed after 10 minutes. Not even a bench packed full of 8 fatties will curb the might of the Greatest Rugby Playing Nation in History 🇳🇿

Geez, I saw a Bok team that were fitter than the ABs. Sad to say. You must still be watching highlights from 2015.

G

The real question is why are they not already as fit as they possibly can be. Anyway you are still living in the past.

That’s a 1990’s view of the Springboks.

They are not quite as mobile as the All Blacks, but they are not far off. But the Springboks have a bit more grunt. They are not afraid to use the ball or counterattack.

The All Blacks 2015 team only just beat the Springboks by 2 in the semi final.

The All Blacks will have to be at their best to beat them; I would prefer it if the All Blacks won, but I’m not counting my chickens yet.

The messages coming from this coaching team seem to be more aligned and certainly a lot clearer than the last lot.

T

That’s pretty easy when they haven’t put a team on the field yet. As Mike Tyson memorably noted, “Everybody has a plan until they get punched in the face.” The “last lot” have an exponentially better record on the field.
