Anton Segner labelled 'non-negotiable' All Blacks selection by Super Rugby champ

The drums continue to beat for an Anton Segner All Blacks call-up after the flanker’s clean sweep at the Blues Awards night, where he was recognised as the club’s best in four categories.

The German-born Tasman product won Player of the Year, Players’ Player of the Year, Fans’ Player of the Year and Forward of the Year, triggering yet more debate over his All Blacks credentials.

The analysts on this week’s episode of the Aotearoa Rugby Pod offered strong endorsements of Segner’s case for higher honours, highlighting the key statistics where he ranks either first or second among New Zealand’s openside options.

With one round of games to go before the playoffs start, Segner’s Blues sit third on the table, and have benefited from his 13 breakdown steals, a number good enough for first-equal alongside Leicester Finag’anuku, his 88 per cent tackle completion, which is second only to Du’Plessis Kirifi, and his nine dominant tackles, which is second only to Ethan Blackadder.

“He’s been tremendous,” long-time commentator Tony Johnson said. “It’s always a fascinating question, because we always seem to have so many good players in the loose forward position. You look around the country and see young (Lucas) Casey and think, gosh, he’s got some star quality, that guy, as well.

“But Segner, you look at his numbers, the metres after contact, strong carries; he’s really learnt to use his body and his power very effectively. It’s got to the point now where I’d be surprised if he wasn’t in the All Blacks, even for the early part of the year.

“I think he’s played his way into contention. But there are other strings to his bow: his defence is very good, his tackle stats are really good, and that lineout game that he’s really developed. He’s definitely been, in a Blues team that’s fired in fits and starts a bit this year, consistently outstanding.”

Bryn Hall, a six-time Super Rugby champion, compared Segner to departing Blues running mate Dalton Papali’i, saying he is tailor-made for the No.7 jersey and ready to be Ardie Savea’s understudy.

“We’ve always known that he’s a very good jackler; I think he’s probably the best jackler in the competition. He’s so efficient in that space,” said Hall.

“But the area I’ve really enjoyed from him this year is his attack. If you look at the stats, he’s probably played the most minutes with over 900, which highlights his consistent ability to be on the field. He’s carrying over the gainline at 74 per cent, which is very, very important at Test level. That efficiency actually surprised me; the best is (Veveni) Lasaqa at 84 per cent, having not played as many minutes, but the rest of the opensides are around 60, 55 per cent.

“I think with his form, I think he’s a non-negotiable. He’s done it for a long time and is still a young man, just 24.”

Loving Segners game at the moment, and he is nowhere near the finished product.

Two years of international experience and he could be something special.

The thing about him that I admire is his speed in decision making. The number of times he cleans up spilled ball, effects passes when cleaning up, and gets in support with assists and turnovers with accuracy is very good, as good as I have seen anywhere in Super Rugby.

Last weekend he demonstrated this in one particular play. He tackled a player and was back on his feet but just missed the turnover, once the ruck formed, he moved a pace left, tackled the next ball runner and was instantly back on his feet to successfully jackle the turnover, all this in a few moments. It is that sort of tactical accuracy that demonstrates just how good he is. No fanfare, just consistently and tirelessly there.

His open field running is good also, most loosies charge like a draft horse, Anton can actually step like a back and constantly makes metres as can be seen in his stats, he is deceptively elusive.

He has much better with his discipline this season in years past would give away a few to many silly penalties ( might have been close or most pens in 25?) been excellent at lineout and carry soft skills massively improved always had plenty of dog and now 110 111 kgs size to bite

Lasaqa’s stats shouldn’t surprise anyway.

Are they only including Segners stats playing openside, or is it matching up against 7 in his more 6 focused roles?

Ardie is the past.

We are growing the list of really good loosies (Segner, Ardie, Lakai, Sititi) who in theory could fill any jumper number and probably do a good job. But we are still not getting a big number six who can look to physically dominate tier one packs and be a consistent line out option. 100% Segner should be in the squad and get some game time but probably not in the first choice 23 until next world cup cycle.

Whilst Segner may well catch the selectors eye he is just one of a number of excellent loosies vying for the position. It may well come down to survival of the fittest as loosies are often susceptible to injuries.

Hall is getting carried away, but I share the excitement around Segner. He ticks all the boxes, as they say…

He has quite a unique profile in New Zealand rugby. He genuinely seems suited to international level on the openside while also being a real lineout option.

Who else has that profile?

No one… maybe Jacobson, but we still don’t know what his best position is at 29!

I’ll even go further than Hall: I can see him in Rennie’s first squad, and I can even see him getting game time!

He’s a genuine option at 7 with Savea at 8 and Sititi at 6. I could be completely wrong, but that’s how I see it.

That’s I mix that could work but surely Lakai is the best loosie in NZ atm consistent as they come every week both sides the ball work rate and has X factor great player and only going to get better I reckon

We have far too many good 7s in NZ, but only one jersey to fill. The problem, as always, is trying to find the right balance in the back row. Something the last two coaches failed to do.

He is a good 6 too and I see him as a great chance to tour SA. May not be a test player, but a quality backrower.

Not sure where Bryan Hall gets the “non-negotiable” from. It’s not like he’s a selector for the ABs and all he’s doing is offering his opinion. To be fair I think Segner should be selected in the wider AB squad but whether he is or isn’t none of it will be because Hall thinks it’s a good idea. With Segner, Casey and Johnny Lee all demonstrating some really good 7’s work I think players like Jacobson will need to watch out because there are better younger players coming through.

Jacobson won’t need to watch out, because he already does a good job taking himself out of the season every year.
