The Super Rugby AU competition began in 2020 when the Super Rugby season was curtailed due to the coronavirus pandemic. As a result, Rugby Australia launched Super Rugby AU so domestic teams could still compete. Similarly, the governing bodies of South Africa and New Zealand also launched their own competitions. These are called Super Rugby Unlocked and Super Rugby Aotearoa respectively.
In Super Rugby AU, all four Super Rugby teams that represent Australia compete alongside Western Force in a round-robin tournament. At the end of the round-robin phase, the top teams play in a qualifying final and then a final to decide the victor. In the first ever edition of Super Rugby AU, Brumbies emerged victorious. They beat the Reds 28-23 in the final after the Reds saw off the Rebels in the qualifying final.
One of the great joys of the Super Rugby Australia tournament is that the competition trials a number of new laws that aim to make the competition more engaging for fans and players alike. For example, in Super Rugby Australia, a red carded player can be substituted after 20 minutes and Super Time means that tied games are settled by a golden point.
Super Rugby Australia is set to return for 2021 and the tournament looks set to be bigger and better than ever. Plus, the competition will even be followed by Super Rugby Trans-Tasman, a crossover tournament where each Australian team will play each New Zealand team once, followed by a final.
