Why Kiss believes Beauden Barrett will be ‘very important’ for All Blacks
The All Blacks have been dealt some injury blows ahead of the Bledisloe Cup series opener at Eden Park, but that has opened the door for a “very important” 145-Test veteran to start against the Wallabies this weekend.
Ruben Love and Richie Mo’unga have both been ruled out, which has seen All Blacks coach Dave Rennie shift Damian McKenzie from fullback to first five-eighth. Will Jordan will still line up on the wing, with Beauden Barrett brought into the starting side.
Barrett has only featured once for the All Blacks this season, playing nine minutes off the bench against the Springboks in Baltimore. The 2015 Rugby World Cup winner last started a Test during the 2025 Autumn Nations Series, wearing the No. 10 jersey against England.
But Wallabies coach Les Kiss doesn’t doubt the significant influence Barrett will have, while lining up alongside brothers Scott and Jordie in the run-on side. “Where do I start,” Kiss said initially, after being asked about what Barrett adds.
“The experience in those big games is important, isn’t it? Him and Damian, they know each other inside out basically in terms of how many times they’ve played together. The other Barrett [Jordie] in there, a brother, and another one [Scott] up front so there’s cohesion right through.
“Beaudy’s gonna be very important for them in a lot of respects, in terms of leadership and being what I would say, the main kicking option other than Damian there, to be able to manage the game from there as well.
“He’s gonna be important for them, for sure.
“It’s a good team. I’m really happy with our team, how we prepped, I’m not talking us down but I really understand that this is a good team and we’re going to have to be good on Saturday.”
The All Blacks are unbeaten in their last 53 Tests at the Garden, having overcome Ireland during the July Nations Championship window. But there is a sense of belief among the Wallabies, who are currently on a six-match unbeaten run.
Kiss has selected a side that includes 625 Tests of experience in the First XV, and another 111 Test caps among the impact players. Allan Alaalatoa and Rob Valetini are the most experienced forwards, and two backs have played at least 50 Wallabies matches.
Joseph-Aukuso Suaalii will remain on the wing, despite Hunter Paisami not being available this week due to suspension. Queensland Reds utility Isaac Henry instead returns to the run-on side at outside centre, joining Len Ikitau in the midfield.
“It’s not just another game. It’s a big game, definitely,” Kiss said.
“Both countries, the Bledisloe, it means a lot. It is significant and therein lies when they’ve named a couple of centurions and they’ve got a lot of caps in their team, it’s impressive.
“We’re going to have to be good, that’s for sure, to go out there and put something on that can compete with it.”
