USA Men’s Eagles Sevens head coach Zack Test believes there is more to come from his team after they finished second in the first HSBC SVNS 2 event of 2026.
Across the weekend in Nairobi, the Eagles won four of their five matches and got their only taste of defeat against eventual champions Germany on Day 2.
Lucas Lacamp was the team’s top try scorer at Nyayo National Stadium with his six efforts. This included a four-try haul against North American rivals Canada at the end of Day 1.
“I’m proud of the boys, but we have so much more to give,” Test said. “It’s been a tough week in Kenya, but the strength of the group is how we come together every single moment.
“We talked all week about brotherhood, and how we need to stick together in every minute of every game. Looking back on this weekend, it was a good start. Day one, we came out, and we did what we needed to do.
“We had a couple slip ups versus Uruguay, but we bounced back in that second half to put the nail in the coffin in that game. We took the game for granted against Germany.
“It’s a good lesson learned that you have to do the process and get the details right every single time.
“But what makes elite teams great is how you respond, and coming up against Kenya in this hostile environment, to put a world class defensive performance together, and get out of here with a second place building into the rest of the SVNS 2, was a great start.”
Test’s team will continue their pursuit of a place at the HSBC SVNS World Championship.
A top four finish after next month’s stops in Montevideo and São Paulo will send the Eagles to events in Hong Kong, Valladolid and Bordeaux, where the opportunity to claim a HSBC SVNS Series spot will present itself.
