Former South Africa captain Victor Matfield has pinpointed why Jacques Nienaber’s defensive system has not been as successful with Leinster as it was with South Africa.

The Springboks won back-to-back World Cups under Nienaber’s aegis in 2019 and 2023, with his high-octane blitz defence perhaps being the defining feature of the world champions’ game plan.

Since his move to Leinster in 2024, he has been unable to transpose that defensive system on the Irish province, with Bordeaux-Begles picking the system apart at times as they triumphed 41-19 in the Investec Champions Cup final on Saturday.

Of course, Leinster have still tasted success during Nienaber’s stint, winning the United Rugby Championship last season and reaching two Champions Cup finals, but their defence has not been the weapon that it was for South Africa.

Matfield believes he knows why, and explained on his Rugby Rivals podcast that Leinster lack the physicality South Africa possess.

“Whenever Leinster fall behind, it’s because of Jacques. You can just hear it’s the defensive system,” he said, highlighting the attention Nienaber receives every time Leinster lose a match.

“I was in the studio on Saturday and we were talking about why it, and why that defensive system from outside in, shutting down, no more than two passes, only works for South Africa, but Leinster are not really getting there.

“We really believe it’s just that physicality. With a Springbok team, every time they make a tackle, they kill the ball right there. It’s slow ball and they can get into space again.

“Unfortunately with Leinster, although they’re there for the first few phases, they don’t slow the ball down. So it’s quick ball, one cleanout at the ruck and Bordeaux had people on their feet.

“If you want to defend like that, you need the physicality as well.”
