England name unchanged XV with two bench tweaks for Argentina revenge mission

England head coach Steve Borthwick has stuck with a winning formula by naming the same XV that triumphed over Fiji last week for their round three Nations Championship fixture with Argentina in Santiago del Estero.

A run of five Tests without a win came to an emphatic halt at the Hill Dickinson Stadium last week, as England ran in 11 tries in a 73-8 victory against a charitable Fiji outfit. Despite the substitutes contributing five of those tries, including a hat-trick to Henry Pollock, Borthwick has backed his starting XV again as England seek to exact some form of revenge on Argentina just days after the football team’s World Cup semi-final heartbreak.

An unchanged XV, of course, means there is still no starting berth for Pollock despite his pyrotechnics against Fiji, which led to plenty of calls for the 21-year-old to start.

The only two changes on the bench will see Asher Opoku-Fordjour revert to being the tighthead replacement, as he was in round one against South Africa, opening the door for Northampton Saints’ loosehead Emmanuel Iyogun to join the squad for what will be his debut. Last week, Opoku-Fordjour was a replacement loosehead, allowing Bristol Bears’ George Kloska to make his debut at tighthead.

The only enforced change in the squad sees Ben Spencer come into the matchday 23 following Alex Mitchell’s hamstring injury last week, which resulted in Marcus Smith playing the final quarter at No. 9.

“We’re excited by the challenge of playing Los Pumas in Santiago del Estero,” said Borthwick.

“We expect a fantastic atmosphere with passionate home support. It promises to be a great occasion, and one the players are excited to embrace.”

For me the question is whether Argentina are going to play to their potential. It seems that they come to the party when playing NZ and, sometimes, SA but for the rest they often go MIA.

I’m looking forward to this game.

Lose and Borthwick must go. The Fiji game was a non contest due to Fiji’s mistakes and red card and proved nothing. There is so much talent not being properly harnessed and utilised. He needs to trust Pollock to start so he can influence the game more

As a french I don’t like Pollock behavior, but as rugby lover, WHY HE’S NOT IN THE STARTING XV ?! Damn, you know what England ? Don't change anything, keep Borthwick. France will have more 6N titles and England won't win RWC.

Last year in november, England won vs NZ and everybody in England was waiting for a win in six nations and maybe a slam. So ,as a french too, it's not because France beat Australia last week that we should give advices to our english friends. Maybe we should be more careful…

Bit simplistic to think just because England keep Borthwick and don’t reach their potential that France will win more 6N titles. Scotland and Ireland are more than capable of stopping France. France also won’t get past SA so unlikely to win a RWC either

At this point I'm not sure what Pollock has to do to get a start and what Borthwicks obsession with JVP is

He could start by giving him a rimmer.

'Bit unfair': Bulls boss Johan Ackermann's vow before All Blacks clash

“kicked out”. Safas clutch so desperately to their string of victim pearls that excuses are always at the ready to explain away their own poor management decisions. SARU threatened their SANZAR partners for years that ‘because of viewership numbers’ that they were owed a bigger slice of the broadcasting rights pie. Aus and NZ quite rightly told them to FO, SANZAR was an equal partnership. Notwithstanding that each partner brought their own strengths and weaknesses, certainly a winning record completely escaped SA teams as part of their ‘package’. OFS were chopped, and early, despite being 1 of the more attractive SA teams to watch. Still the concentration of SA players from 5 teams to 4 had little discernible improvement on teams performance. In fact, SA teams were - by far - the least successful partner. Only 1 Champion SA club whereas all 3 origin Aus teams won and all 5 NZ teams have won. SA teams had a 22% win rate in NZ - so noone was turning up to watch them - whilst NZ teams had a 50% win rate in SA. When Covid pandemic hit the entire World and, NZ for 1 closed borders in and out, obviously this impacted an International competition and whilst a trans-Tasman lite-Super comp returned eventually, SARU used this opportunity to scream “we’ve been kicked out”. The reality was a temporary solution that would have soon corrected itself. Of course everyone knows the Safas innately clutch desperately to being a victim - ‘noone likes us, we dont care’ - and everyone outside of SA knows that the truth is found elsewhere. After only a few seasons of turning up to matches with teams full of development players in the URC/Champions Cup, those partner nations and their fans are already sick of the moaning and whinging that inherently accompanies all things Sth African. SARU are probably still kidding themselves that they will enter the 6Nations and that they will be “kicked out” of the Rugby Championship. What a bunch of big babies.
