Lyon have approached Top 14 rivals Montpellier and enquired about the availability of their Wales and Lions international lock Adam Beard, who still has another two years left to run on his contract.

Swansea-born Beard, 30, who has been capped 68 times by his contract only arrived in Montpellier on a three-year contract last summer after spending 11 years with the Ospreys.

He has made 20 appearances for the club this season, including coming off the replacements bench during their Challenge Cup final victory against Ulster in Bilbao two weeks ago.

But he faces stiff competition for places at the Septeo Stadium, from the likes of Florian Verhaeghe, Bastien Chalureau, and Tyler Duguid, which will only increase when Ruben Van Heerden arrives from the Stormers this summer.

And, according to Midi Olympique, Lyon, who are losing Killian Geraci to Bayonne when his contract runs out at the end of the season, are in the market for a lock and Beard, who made his Lions test debut against the Springboks five years ago, fits the profile of what they want.

They are keen on Beard, who made 135 appearances for his hometown club before crossing the channel, and are having talks in a bid to agree a deal for a move at the end of the season.

Beard told the press agency AFP earlier in the season that moving to France was a tough decision, but after speaking to his wife, netball international Chelsea, he wanted to experience something different

“It was a tough decision, and something that I had long conversations about with my wife, family, friends, and even people in the rugby circles. I’m 29 now, and there’s less years ahead, so I wanted to experience something different.

“I obviously heard great things about Montpellier as a city, as a club, and just playing in the Top 14. I believe it’s the best league in the world, and it is international-standard matches week in, week out, and I feel at my age that can only be beneficial for myself.”

Solid squad player.

Why have a foreign squad player though who may eat more of the cap and be called away for international duty? Starter then you take the punt, but not squad man.

Jake White: Test rugby has changed a lot since I was Bok coach

Yeah rugby has changed alot and that has to do with the massive physical demands being placed on peak athletes and the professionalisation of the sport. Athletes these days are subject to strict conditioning standards and have to eat right, drink right, train right, rest right and play with the right technique. The phsical standards in rugby have become increasingly professionalised and rugbys athletes now compare with any top tier sport globally. Games are up, increased intensity of collisions, the effects of multiple collisions are now well known by medicine and the cumulative stress modern rugby takes on the body is well studied. Caps are not being handed out for fun, its become a necessity to rest and rotate or injuries can become inevitable. Some might argue that injuries are already inevitable for the modern rugby player, I struggle to name one who hasnt faced a serious career threatening injury. Stats have become more relevant and informs innovation. Innovation has become essential for success. Those who stand still achieve little. Coaching teams are ballooning because you have to find coaches that see the game differently and who can give you an edge. The inches now matter in rugby and is often the difference between success and failure. Players are increasingly becoming mercenaries, you go where the money is and your players play around the world. Rugby is no longer a regional game but is become increasingly globalised. The world cup matters most because it has become the ultimate success to win it. Its now the hardest comp in the world to win. Traditionalists want their players to play at home, they want fewer subs, the best players to play more, they want to maintain the sanctity of the the cap and they find stats hollow. They see the game that used to be and wonder where its gone. The game grew up, the game evolved and if you dont evolve with it you lose. It about time the traditionalists grew up.
