England need to move away from the aerial game, fin smith needs to be ten , Furbank at 15 and and freeman should be moved back to the wing to make space for Ollie Lawrence and max Ojomoh’s attacking game this would add another dimension to englands backline and promote more of a running game

Absolutely. I’m excited to see how Borthwick responds next week. I think we do need to make one or two changes (I’m hoping Furbank comes back at some point), but that’s more because I think proactive rotation is a good selection policy rather than as a knee jerk reaction.

Tactics need a review especially our over reliance on default kicking and I would imagine there’s more in the Blackett’s attack locker we haven’t seen yet. We have to be more dimensional.

Not unreasonable that many are questioning the kicking tactics today. On the point of contestable kicks specifically, yesterday’s loss highlights two inherent risks that hadn’t really been exposed previously: first, it’s always a 50/50. England have won a greater percentage previously, but were second best yesterday and when you’re second best against a team that can turn defense into attack at the flip of a switch, you’re exposing yourself to trouble.

Secondly, the contest itself can be inherently risky as illustrated by Arundell’s second yellow. Get it wrong and things can go bad very quickly. This risk/reward ratio went badly against England yesterday, which in my mind suggests the more you employ contestable kicking as a tactic, the greater the odds gradually turn against you. It’s like flipping a coin and calling heads repeatedly.

Is anyone aware of the law / rule that the front rows are not aloud to lift their opponents feet off the ground, yes I have played in games years ago when this was classed as a bit of one up man ship if you could manage this. Sheehan and Furlong lifted, never thought I would see that. The referee clearly does not know the laws of the game. Or am I wrong ……??

Totally agree, there is no way TF is a test centre at this stage of his career and needs to improve his handling if he wants to be. He was much more effective on the wing and that’s where he belongs going forward.

Great post and totally agree - this is still a young improving team and yesterday just confirms we have more work to do before we are the finished article.

I had two question marks over this team after the AI’s, would they be the same team AWAY from Twickenham and could they maintain the same energy levels with the week to week nature of games in a tournament, as Borthwick has heavily rotated and we have had a down week in between the big games so far.

Will be interesting for sure to see whether he sticks with Ford or starts FS? One thing really clear yesterday was that FD/TF were no match for the Scottish Lions midfield pairing and it would be surprising if SB decided to continue this experiment.

Your comment put a smile on my face this morning as I feel exactly the same way + our brand new coffee grinder jammed on its first use! Not an ideal start to a Sunday morning!

Not much analysis out there as yet. Will Greenwood (largely) puts the blame on the 6-2 bench and highlights Borthwick’s decision to put F. Smith on the bench as one questionable area, but I think that’s irrelevant. It was the tactics that undid them. England have enjoyed great returns off of contestable kicks lately, but they barely won anything yesterday. Take that weapon out of the equation and England suddenly looked pretty vulnerable.

Even the WonderPoshBoy Bollock couldn't do anything to help. So much for all the building up in the pompress about him and his team. Not surprising they didn't perform. And while they had a one man advantage for quite a while it was fantastic to watch the Scottish backs running so well. Special hats off to Steyn and Jones, the SA connections.
