Richard Wigglesworth is clear on what England need to fix for Fiji
England expect new boy Benhard Janse van Rensburg to bring “an all-court game” to his potential debut against Fiji.
The South Africa-born utility back’s eligibility to play for England on residency grounds will be confirmed on Wednesday, and the 29-year-old is set for an immediate Test start.
England will confirm their starting team against Fiji on Thursday as they seek to bounce back from an opening Nations Championship defeat by South Africa in the unusual surroundings of Everton’s Hill Dickinson Stadium.
“He brings an all-court game, doesn’t he?,” England defence coach Richard Wigglesworth said about Janse van Rensburg at Tuesday’s media session.
“I enjoy how he wants to hit and loves the physical side of the game, but he also wants the ball on the other side.
“If he gets a chance I’m sure that’s what he’ll show us as well.”
England suffered four straight Six Nations defeats after beating Wales in their Allianz Stadium opener.
The pressure on head coach Steve Borthwick dialled up further on Saturday as South Africa turned on the power at Ellis Park to emerge emphatic 45-21 winners.
Wigglesworth said. “There was a lot of effort and endeavour. But for 10 minutes at the start of each half we weren’t good enough, and a good team exposes that.
“They were very accurate and we weren’t, and they ended up with all the possession and momentum.
“The middle part of the match didn’t look like that, but it’s an 80-minute game.”
Emmanuel Iyogun and Chandler Cunningham-South have been called up by England following more injury withdrawals.
Northampton prop Iyogun, who could be in line to make his debut, replaces Beno Obano, while Cunningham-South comes into the squad in place of Cadan Murley.
Tom Roebuck, who was a surprise omission from Borthwick’s original 36-man squad, was called up on Monday to replace George Furbank.
Harlequins-bound full-back Furbank had his appendix removed on Friday while in Johannesburg, and was due to return to the UK on Tuesday.
